I am fairly new to Lightwave. What could I do to improve the saucer, or anything else that noticably needs improvement?

One suggestion would be to adjust the lighting, especially in the foreground on the "floor" surface around the water glass, so there is nothing in the render that measures 255,255,255 (RGB). It just looks a little "blown out".
My 2c, FWIW.

Yeah, lighting's a bit screwed up, the shadow on the plates is way darker than the glass. Obviously there will be a difference, but not that big!
Everything's too clean, muck it up :D

Hmmm...
- Light intensity a bit high... say reduce it 20%... I usually (for a kitchen scene) use an area light at about 45%, then another (spot) with shadows turned off at 10% (with a slight blue tint) pointing at about 10 degrees off the table plane.( from the opposite direction from the main light to fill the shadows with a hint of blue, though inside, sometimes reversing the colours- primary cool/secondary warm - works too)
- The refractive index looks a bit steep for that glass... either that or it's made of a material like diamond.
- the plate is ok, except is a bit thin, most saucers have an edge about 1/4 inch thick, that plate looks sharp enough to cut you. :)
- There seems to be some odd rendering errors in the tile. Is that a texture or geometry. I always triple all polys for the final render to avoid those odd black lines that can appear with quads and rendering. ?? bug ??
- Keep in mind that when doing refracting, the more polys you have the more realistic the result, it seems your straw is not being refracted evenly, perhaps subdividing the model may improve that, though it will increase render time as well.
- Tile - marble surfaces - in the kitchen I'm assuming - usually has some sort of molding to keep moisture from collecting at the base... even a continous silicon bead would add realism.
Cheers.
It's too clean, you need to break it up a bit and possibly play with the composition, try a landscape format.
