After installing Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 two days ago, I've found it has serious problem with multitasking and LightWave, modo and AE so far.

If there is a LW in the background rendering, either with fprime or F10, even with task priority set to low. It is impossible to work on another LW or modeler, or the above mentioned apps. Bringing up the file requester or tumbling the viewport is a drag, terrible.

It wasn't like this before SP1, or XP.

I'm thinking of rolling back to pre-SP1, but just before I do so, would like to know if anyone facing the same problem?

please give it a try, put a LW to render and work on another, or launch another modeler, or modo and see if this is a common problem with Vista Sp1.

Thanks.

Layout is burning 100% horse power ( 8 cores ) in the background. I am working in modeler without any slowdowns. Also have Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1. Using LW 32 bit.

Modeler works just fine while Layout renders 100% here too (F10 and FPrime)

It happens to me as well, on XP64 as well as Vista x64 with and without SP1. Different CPUs as well... Layout is definetly using the CPU time very agressively... too agressively for my taste.

Sometime there's even a (multi-second) delay writing text in another app while LW renders in the background (with a manually lowered priority!).

Cheers,
Mike

the multi-second delay should be common, but in my case, you could notice a vast difference, if LW/modo is rendering with low priority, launching another modeler will take almost 10-15 seconds, and futher more when it is launched, you can't even navigate the viewport. I'm running on Nvidia 8800GTS-512 with latest driver.

Uninstalled SP1, problem still persist. seems like some other things that is causing it.

Which version of LW are you using?

7.5, 8.5, 9.2, 9.3, and the latest beta, all behaves the same when there is one LW or modo rendering at low priority in the background. same for AE CS3 and modo if background is rendering. It appears to affect apps that is using openGL. PS CS3, Autocad and probably others that doesn't make heavy use of openGL works fine.

Did a clean reinstall of Vista, same problem, strange thing is that i didn't notice it earlier after got this Quadcore precision workstation from dell about a month ago probably because I hadn't seriously work on it until recently.

I like the aero accelerated interface working with the freeware expose like windows switcher http://insentient.net/. Really sad that I have to go back to XP on this new machine.

Can we assume you tried it without the insentient stuff installed and Aero turned on?

yes, the second clean install is 'clean' as in nothing is installed except drivers, and with Aero.

I highly suspect it is the chipset and display driver that is causing the problem, but those are the latest drivers from dell and nvidia, what else could i try, i'm running out of idea.
