So I have been working on this project for a week and thought it was about time to get some crits. I know there isnt any smoothing applied to the bottom tube (not sure how that happened but its an easy fix) So critique away!

Are all those nurnies hand-built or is that the ultimate nurnie collection?

Either way, love it, looks very "build for a function".

caveboy- thanks!

sandman300- thanks man I appreciate it!

3DGFXStudios- thanks and I will post some wires soon :)

colkai- all hand built nurnies :) ( i can add them to my collection now ;) ) Thanks

Love it! Are you going to model one of those old fashioned cylons as well? Then of course you have to model the Galactica as well!

Simply awesome! Love all the detailed work you put in on this!

You know, with some good texturing work this could look better than the original!

Amazing.

Would that I could make stuff like that.
How many polys? And what method did you use to make all the etchings; Stencil, or a drilling tool?

Are you sure that you just started in January? :D

Julian_Boolean

adrian- if I have time I will get right on it ;)

WilliamVaughn- Thanks again Will :)

starbase1- I hope it will! However hoping doesnt mean anything.... you just gotta do it :)

Mark The Great- around 333,000 polys but its not totally optimized so it will go down a little. I love using the stencil tool when it comes to hard surface modeling and of course everyone knows about the bevel. Yes January is when I started :) wish i could of started earlier!

Very Nice.....
Just out of curiosity... Was this just for fun or are you going to reanimate footage from the origional series? I mean how many times can you see the same 3 Cylon ships fly by in one episode :D

Just kidding :)

jnddepew- thanks

shadowlock- hehe thanks man!

so i finally got time to do some renders of the wireframe. Again I found that there is an object that is barely floating and a couple surfacing errors. I will be fixing this once I get more time :) . These images were taken without AA. Tell me what you think!

-Oops just noticed the pic that shows the bottom is inside the floor..... thats what happens when u rush.... sry

I had that model when I was a kid. Great work!

sandman300- i used a miniature model.

Awesome job, man. I can't wait to see it fully textured and ready for some animation. :D

I love the model. This version doesn't look as scary as the new one, also resembles a lot the snow speeder from Star Wars.

Very nice stuff. About how long do you think you've taken so far to build this?

Looks great! Nice details. I also had this model when I was a kid. I rigged up a piece of wire to it and slid it on a piece of fishing line down the hill in my front yard. This was one of my favorite fighter designs growing up.

rickfrancis- I appreciate it! I cant wait either!

Titus-thanks!

inigo07- thanks! it took me a week to complete this model!

DanD- Thanks!! Sounds like a great childhood memory! It is a pretty cool design!

I just went home for vacation so I wont be back until this monday to start back up! I will start texturing it that week!

The ship looks great JB!

I had a toy model of this when the original series came out! Brings back memories! :)

Thanks guys for all your compliments!!!

Ok everyone I have started to texture this bad boy.... I have only done a few pieces but you can see that in the pictures :). There are a few errors here and there but I can fix them pretty easily. Also I will be doing side projection maps so dont worry about the shearing of the texture on the sides of the raider for I havent gotten to them yet! Crit away guys!!!! Again I will be updating these textures more frequently!!! Thanks everyone!

JeffrySG

Looking very cool so far Julian! :D
The side sheering always throws me, so I know it will look much better once you update them too.

what are you using for your texture reference on this?

Julian_Boolean
04-24-2008, 03:18 PM
Just looking at metal from different pictures and sort of blending ideas :).

Here are some refined images that I did today.... I added a texture to the right gun holder. Also I changed the scene and did a new lighting setup. Also I havent done the side planar maps so there is still shearing going on but it will be fixed . I just realized that when I remapped the image back onto the ship it shifted a little so some stuff is off but I will fix that tonight and do a rerender other than that tell me what you think!... Again critique away

I don't ever recall them being that dirty BUT the texturing looks great so far!

Julian_Boolean
04-25-2008, 03:06 PM
ya adrian I really wanted to go for a rugged look so I changed it a bit... however I think its coming along pretty well and thanks!!!

here is a small update!

starbase1
04-26-2008, 06:55 AM
The effect is very clever, but I think you have gone a bit too far - this looks more like a wreck than rugged too my eyes...

Julian_Boolean
04-26-2008, 11:46 AM
starbase1- see the thing is I am going to make a scene where it looks like this raider has crash landed into a hangar or docking bay. I may even make an animation of it crash landing... so I think it justifies why it looks so beat up.... anymore thoughts?

Always liked this one better than the Viper, why do the bad guys always have the better design teams?

The corrosion detail seems a bit large, kinda mucks with the scale of the overall object, wile there's no problem with big dings and scratches they should be interspersed with finer detail, it will help make it look less like a toy.

Keep up the good work.

This looks cool. I agree with danielkaiser, and think that the scale of the texturing might be a bit off. It's looking a little large. Not sure how close you'll be getting on your renders but on the close up wip image you're getting some pixelation due to low res textures. This may not be a problem if you'll never see it that close though.

If you need it to look this damaged maybe have some underlying paint or metal appear where there is a lot of damage.

www.cgtextures.com has tons of great metal rust weathering images to use as textures if you're looking for other sources, too.

That makes a lot more sense - it certainly doesn't look flight ready!

I agree with the other comments about the scale being off. Don't get me wrong , it's a very effective extreme grungey effect you have achieved....

I also think it's a bit too even - the dirt collects more in crevices and gaps, whereas the surface damage is more on the exposed sections.

Keep at it, it is coming along well!

Nick

This is fantastic. Excellent detail. Lets see some animation!!
