Paisley O. Posuum!!

Kay yall, my cousin is writing a childrens book about a possum. It's really quite neat. Anyway, these are its specs,
Name:Paisley O. Possum
I.Q.: ALOT (hehe)
Description: Very plastic-y face, saslite fur (not coarse at all, kinda like sulley's from monsters Inc.), Rigid tail, cute ears, and a paisley-print belly.

Where should I start for this? Thank yall in advance a WHOLE lot for your time with helping me!! :) Please do help. This is a big project for my cousin.

To start, I would research possums then draw a bunch of different concept drawings for a more stylized character. Someone that shows his features. Then, after you've done this, then begin to texture, but only after you've selected a final look.
