Hi all,
We have a VT5 system with 1TB of storage from Jef Keathley. We use our system for highschool news and announcements. We currently edit on 5 PCs running Pinnacle Studio. (Yes, I know we need to purchase SpeedEdit, but haven't done so yet!)
My next project is to network them all together so they can share a large drive to store video, thus editing over the network.
My first thought was to use the 1TB of storage in RAID0 configuration that is in our VT. The VT and the editing PCs all have 1000mbps Gigabit network adapters. I tested this last week and was able to connect three of the editing PCs to the VT in a closed gigabit network.
I had some test SD clips stored on the VT and was able to edit different projects simutaneously on three PCs without any problems. I was using a very small percentage of the network allowance. I have no doubt that I would able to connect the other two PCs to the network and edit with them at the same time.
However, all of the above was done when we weren't using the VT in a live situation. We use 3 cameras with chromakeyed live-sets. We usually have 2 or 3 DDR videos running at once.
When I tested our network editing while using VT5's main features, the network editing struggled. The VT performance seemed to have priority and didn't have any problems, but network editing wasn't usable.
Since the students are often editing DURING our live shows, I don't think we want to risk this, unless someone has some suggestions.
My next option is to purchase an external NAS (Network Attached Storage) device to network to the editing PCs. If no one has suggestions for using the VT storage for this purpose, has anyone used any of the following products, and do you think they will be able to handle this type of use? We are mostly going for network speed, rather than redundancy. Therefore, we would most likely operate in RAID-0 mode.

What seems to be the difference in the two above products? They can both be purchased with 2 drives at 500GB each, totalling 1TB and can be used in both RAID-0 and 1. One has 4 bays, which is the only difference that I can see.
Thanks for any input!
Brian
