Could you use a better way to round out the collection of codecs on your system, with ease?

I've kept filehippo.com as a homepage for awhile, and discovered a new release of this cool Freeware package, called K-lite Codec Pack.

In one of NewTek's FAQ regarding how to better implement the use of (QuickTime was it?) a particular codec in one's system, I remember reading a reference to K-Lite.

Well, Here's the link! Enjoy!

Some warning here:

I recently encountered big problems with my After Effects (7) - I couldn't create cameras or lights, and I couldn't edit my preferences - I would get some crazy text with strange ascii symbols in each case. Some filters had suddenly dissapeared as well, and on startup AE would give a warning that some line of code was not read and if I would debug please.

Turned out that this all started after I had installed the K-lite pack. And sure enough, after uninstalling it After Effects now works as it should again.

The problem with K-lite is that it installs a whole heap of codecs and apps in one fell swoop, and apparently one of these screws up at least After Effects. And it's hard to figure out which component in K-lite is the exact culprit, since you'd have to run through all of it's 50+ codecs, each with multiple options, and each with optional players, utilities etc.

So for me: no more mr K-lite.

Cheers, Jasper

We appreciate your cautioning us about that conflict w/After Effects, Jasper. How many months ago, approximately, did this mishap occur (likely on an earlier K-Lite incarnation)?

Yesterday!!!!! (With a K-Lite I downloaded and installed about two weeks back) (Or, edit, last week. Not so sure exactly when. But very sure I only found out yesterday what was giving me those problems in After Effects.)

Curious: Had you tried a "Save" in Window's SYSTEM RESTORE utility -- before installing that older K-Lite Pak, then simply tried a "Restore" operation after the trouble in After Effects?

Yes, but it didn't work (I've been reassigning partitions in the meantime and this can confuse system restore)- in the end, manually uninstalling K-lite did.

Side note: to be sure, I checked it was K-lite by re-installing it, getting the same errors again, again uninstalling it and seeing the problems dissapear again. So, little doubt that it's something in K-lite that causes those errors in AE.

And, by the way, it wasn't an older pack, it was the latest, at least the latest there was a week ago. The megapack thing, with all the players included.

Oh, Ok. I wish I knew which version you were dealing with. This one is 3.70, just appeared at file-hippo.com on Thursday.

I have an OS/programs drive named KLite, so as to use it without worrying about stepping on codecs.

Really like Gspot included.

GoodLuck

When I installed, the K-lite installer asked me if I wanted to install the latest version, and the last time I did that was yesterday. So it must have been the version that was online yesterday (friday) at the k-lite site. (Which is stated as version 2.27) I can't see version number on my system, since the process of downloading and installing 'the latest version' was run by the installer automatically, it did not show the location the file was saved to or if it was deleted after installing by the installer.

Kilowatkins, can you explain what you mean? You have a separate windows install that you fire up exclusively for use with Klite?

You don't need install K-lite for Gspot? I always just install Gspot utility, and yeah I think its a useful one.

'Sounds as if Kilo has a separate drive, with Windows OS on it. On that secondary drive he has installed all his codecs.

I'm wondering if KiloWatkins still would have gotten around the codecs "stepping on each other" issue, even if he *didn't* have another copy of the OS on that secondary drive.

In other words, I suppose a 2nd OS installation would not be *really* necessary, although it's handy to have. Am I correct?

Actually, I don't really get it... the second installation only makes sense if you run a dual boot startup?

Codecs have been giving me headaches ever since computers started; I always have so many different DV-codecs for instance that on the one hand I really need if I want to be able to open all the files I have to work with, but that, if installed in the wrong order, mess up the handling of DV-files completely or selectively in this or that app. And I suppose it's going to happen all over again with the switch to HD now.

I've a TMPGenc VT5 drive, VT5 OS drive, and original OS/programs/storage drive on one system. Yep, I always clone the OS/programs when I add a drive. On my SE only system, I named an OS drive Klite, so if I have any problem videos I can boot to that. I lost stand alone Gspot several years ago, asked Steve at ImageFX and he never got back with me. So I was pretty happy with finding it listed in Klite drop down.

Wow, that's thorough. But not unreasonable, as I said myself in the post above yours.

... that's it, isn't it? Freeware and standalone.

Is it 2.70a? I run it from the drive, not the install. Really not much booting to the Klite drive, unless I've something I just want to test. I use www.erightsoft.com SuperConverter on three PC's as I would rather start as uncompressed as possible in SE. Great for .mov's and .vob's. I have not spent much time with Gspot and the new codec's, fwiw.

I've downloaded K-Lite Codec Pack, version 3.70

You know KiloWatkins -- the folks at erightsoft.com certainly make it difficult for a newbie to locate the DOWNLOAD link for SuperC (i.e., SuperConverter™)! Man, you have to puruse through a whole bunch of text reading material!

Got a direct link to the Download for us? (I noted it wants an I.E. browser for the download to work reliably. (Yuk)

Google 'softpedia super', the first hit is a link to a direct download. (I went to the eright site too at first, but I couldn't find the download link after looking for it for fifteen minutes... what an amazing poorly constructed mess...). Great compression results, by the way.

Thanks, D' We appreciate your posting that! Whew!

Well, OK, -- but I dare say that it is probable that relatively few people have downloaded the freeware applet, SuperConverter, compared to the number who have visited the site.

In advancing the virtues of this fine product, the author admonishes the site visitor to not to email him about how to download the file without circling back into the sales pitch.

Therefore, he *knows* his site is horrifically designed, with its clutter, hidden download link, and grossly verbose over-sell, likely due to having heard innumerable cries from those desiring to simply download the item.
