Hello, everyone,

after plenty of experiments with audio- and video-compression I have finally managed to put my short film "Kicker" online. You can download it here (various formats available):

www.kickerfilm.de/shortfilm.html

I tried to learn 3D with this (first) project, focussing on lighting, framing/camera, with some animation as well. It's all done in Lightwave with help of X-DOF2, Shadow Designer 2 and Darktree. I didn't use LW for the music, though.

Hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Marc

This is an excellent film. Almost undbelievable that it was your first 3d project. Quite amazing. I really liked the idea and the camera work was particularly well done.

I want to be honest, Drclare: I did put a reflecting sphere on a checkered plane some ten years ago in 3D Studio R2 ;)

That was great!! That kind of answered one of my questions in my thread. and gives me great hope for my idea. If you could give some suggestion for a first time user that would be great.

I can quickly see the similarities to one of Pixars earlier shorts, Red's Dream (http://www.pixar.com/shorts/rd/index.html) (ie. the rainy and quite indoors, the [inanimate] protagonist dreaming of a grander life), but what I notice more are what sets it apart. First, the animation is very involving and lively, even if it does have something of a rhythm that less experienced animators tend to follow, and the cinematography work is worlds above Pixar's parallel piece. Whatever I may have perceived lacking in the character animation was carried further by the camera work. One thing more, which really sets it apart in the sense of film: the protagonist doesn't dream of grandeur for himself and awaken to a dark life of rain and bluesy sax, but he dreams of a good game, outmatched by the opposite team, and keeps on dreaming, contented. Definitely a more mature and fun approach. Great film! I'd love to see some more animated work from you.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.

Unfortunately, Riki, none of the film festivals to which I sent my film wanted to show it. That's why I have decided to just put it online. I'm still continuing to submit it, though. Maybe I'm lucky.

T.Fentie, did you have a look at the production notes on the films website (www.kickerfilm.de/notes.html)? It gives you some insight into how I, being a first time user at the time experienced the whole produdtion process. O'd be happy to answer your questions.

FlashDS, now your post this was really flattering.
The idea was probably inspired by the pixar films in general, not pariculary Red's Dream, where inanimate objects coming to life are a recurrent theme. Also, I just had to make some choices to keep the whole project feasible, that Pixar also had to make back in the days (Just one location, no speaking characters, no humans).

That was simply awesome. I loved it :) Actually made me laugh out aloud. I loved the music; the little camera antics. Great stuff!

Great film... I loved the direction, editing and camera angles. It shows how important these elements are in a relatively simple scene. My only slight reservation is the way you made the feet flexible... but that's a minor detail, the characters have real pathos and personality. I can't understand why it wasn't accepted for the festivals.

Very very nice! Nice camera work, and timing was great. The only critic I had was at some points it was a little dark. But other than that it was fantasic. ;)

That is just soooooo good! The pacing is perfect (I always rush things), there are enough little surprises to keep you hooked, and getting that much character and personality into such simple figures is an awesome acheivement.

Love the camera angles at the start too - the arrival of the title is gimmicky but completely approriate.

The only pronblem I can see is that I can't award it 6 stars!

For me, the finest animation I have seen here.

Ho, ho, easy on the praising, Nick ;)

No, really, I'm glad you enjoyed the film.

And it seems as if some local festivals are showing some interest in the film. At last ... :)

Bitfilm-Festival (http://www.bitfilm-festival.org) has just started in Hamburg, and guess what: "Kicker" will be shown! (http://www.bitfilm-festival.org/cgi-bin/festival.fpl?op=category&category=bit_short&partner=bitfilm_en) If you happen to be in town come check it out. The festival has got an interesting selction of films, including some very experimental ones.

My first festival. I'm quite excited, actually. In the end, that's all I wanted when I made the film.
