I have a large area of grass to texture, so I've made a hi-res repeating texure which seems to tile ok, except its still got that obvious repeating thing going on when its tiled many times. In the past I've used procedurals to break it up a bit, but its not working particularly well with a complex texture like this grass.
Just wondering what other folks do for grass textures of this nature?
PS .I want to avoid fur/hair plugins for rendering time purposes!

One thing you can do to help a little bit is to create a Photoshop file that is about a 10x10 tile of your texture. Then clone out as much of the repeating pattern as possible. Then use this texture for your grass. Yes you have a texture that is much larger but it will only get tile repeat patterns 1/10 as often, and you won't need procedurals. If the 10x10 tile is too much you can do it any size you want, too.

A technique I use is multiple layers of tiled grass image maps that are different images with subtle distinctions. Then I load those with varying degrees of transparency in the texture layer panel. After that I throw in some subtle fractal noise in the texture and diffuse channels.

I do what KStar does too - but I tend to use a fractal pattern as an alpha for the second layer. I also tend to rotate the layers a bit as well. Usually need around 3 texture layers but two of them can be the same texture, just one of them oversized and rotated as mentioned.
