Hello-
Is there any way to assign different Falloff Types to various bones in a single object? Please advise.

No but you can change a bones strength directly or change the strength based on a bones rest length etc etc.

Oh, good suggestion. I honestly hadn't thought of that--I'll see how well it works.

I'm just rigging a human figure (same as always.) The problem here is that I want a tight, precise bend (128 works great) on the fingers and a softer one (2) on the wrist.

I typically just use ^128 and use other ways to soften certain parts.
