Hey all,

This is my first time posting in this forum and I thought Id join in!
I had to do this 4 hour minimum self portrait drawing, any medium for my human figure class. I had the assignment for about 3 weeks...but...yea, did it all late last night and into the wee mornin hours today.

I felt pretty accomplished on it since Ive never really done a large (18x24") charcole sketch, for that amount of time and a lot of details. I know full well this doesnt compete with other artists work on this forum..but I liked it! Hope you will too! :D

Your self portrait conveys depth with soulful insight. It has a Classical Renaissance quality.

I don't always achieve what you've achieved in this work. I try but it can be so elusive, its not so much a technical achievement, its almost spiritual.

I'd love to see how your work develops, kept posting.

Thanks for the compliments! Im flattered :D . I havent drawn in a long time until my human figure class here in school, but I think its one of my most refined charcole/drawings.

Ill post more if I can!
Thanks again!

Bit of an update, after handing in my self portrait drawing I recieved a new assignment in class. This is a 3 hour charcole drawing with a live model. Still needs a lot of work but I doubt Ill be able to get a chance to work on it. Kind of really bad quality because this was taken with my phone and not a camera. Maybe Ill update it when I get home.
Later all!

Very nice work on both. Having a good grasp of physical art media will go a long way toward CG work. Keep trucking on.

Very nice work.

MAN!... if only I could have had a clothed figure to draw.... all they ever served us in college was nudes!

Then we only had, like, 6 seconds to get the basic form down... then we had to take it home and finish it....

I did a self portrait once... in ebony pencil, on frosted mylar. It was for a stage performance of "How to succeed in business without really trying"... I somehow got the roll of the lead character. I had to come up with my own props for the boardroom scene. (My parents have it framed and hanging in their home)

Probably the last time I actually sat down to draw anything for fun. That was 1974 when I was serving time in the Air Force..

Keep it up!! Don't let your skills stagnate, like I did.

Chuck

Thanks for the replies, compliments and support! :D

Yea it can be fun drawing the human form. I can see how keeping your drawing skills up is a good thing for CG, especially for concept art. Usually we have nude models to draw in class, unless its a portrait project that we're working on.

Maybe Ill post some of my other drawings up on this thread.

THIS is proof that a traditional/sketch section was a good idea. Awesome work.

Finally got a chance to spary todays charcole drawing and take some good high res pictures. Here are a few.

For porfolios and transfering to other colleges...is it best to have a digital form of drawings (scanned/pictures) or should I get one of those 18"x24" plastic sheet display porfolios?

Use both forms. It's good to protect your work. But the digital record is smart as well, besides its just so much easier to carry around.

Make sure that besides your finished looking charcoal sketches, compliment them with quick gestural sketches. 30 second one minute gestural poses.

Thanks for the tips. I have been documenting and photographing my finished and better work. Usually in class we start off with 10 to 15 gesture drawings. They're pretty fun and sure do help out for the long finished drawings.

Hey, that's an interesting attempt. It's compelling at least. OK, it reminds me of;

Haha, thanks. Now that my human figure class is completed, I havent really produced a lengthy drawing in a while. Maybe Ill work on one over break inbetween my semesters...
