hi,
i started texturing a hires model of a plane for a HD render, and therefore,i have to have hi def textures (the main body is a 6000/6000 texture)
but once i load that TGA, lightwave won't open anymore picture file, telling me that the format is unknown etc etc... (which doesn't happen when i don't load the big 6000 tga)
i guess that must be a ram problem,
is there a way to bypass that? (i have 8G ram,but win32 only recognises 2)

Run a 64 bit OS (e.g. Win XP 64 or Vista 64), or invest in infiniMap (www.infinimap.com). Or both :)

I'd seriously recommend infiniMap, although you'll need to convert your texture into one of the supported image formats.

mmh it seems nice. but i can't figure out how the software will let me use unlimited size textures without falling out of ram..... and it's 300 euros,so i'd better be sure before i buy.
do you use it?

and i quite don't understand:
i managed to ultra optimize my texture, having them to pass from 100Mo to 3.7 Mo with photoshop, almost lossless, and when opening these very small files in lightwave,it turns it to a 200 mo file. :s
even a jpg of 300Ko turns into a 50mo file in lightwave (i see that in the picture editor in the top right corner)

That's because JPGs are compressed - an image's size on disk has very little to do with its size in memory. JPG is also a horrible format for use with LightWave, try PNG instead and have a look at this tutorial (http://www.lightwiki.com/Optimised_image_use) as well.

Infinimap uses enormous texture maps with very little ram usage inside LightWave itself.
