did it work? am i finally getting some people to look at this?

This is my audi tt WIP. i have a couple of questions.

what is the standard subdivision level for subpatches? i think i had this set at 30. what would be the best way to patch the side windows on this car. it is a little difficult.....i just realized that there are tower bars that need to be added to the spot where the side windows are. that might make it easier. maybe harder. not for sure.

how can i put an image on an object so that i can get the reflection on the car? i figured out how to put the image on there, but it is all skewed and distorted. is there a better way to do it?

does anyone know of a website with some good car surfaces on it? or tuorials on how to make surfaces?

if you are getting frustrated with my questions, i am sorry. i am still a newbie. i have only been at this for about a month now. this is one of my first complicated objects. everything else has been like coffee cups and tea kettles and ink pens.

other than my questions, can anyone see anything wrong with my model? or have any tips for improving it? i would really like some input on this.

thanks

one other question. what is the average length of time it takes to create a finished car? i started this on saturday, june 28. worked on it all day saturday and restarted on sunday. am i taking a long time?

Bro, maybe the reason no one is replying to your post is 'cause your questions have been answered here already about three million times. Try searching the forums you will find links to all the car tutes you need. As for the pic you posted I'd say you need to take it further before you ask for comments. K?

Hello Jokerd007

As Uberslayer mentioned there are many tutorials on building cars and surfacing reflective objects out there, but here's a couple of tips to get you up and running.

If the reflected image is looking skewed and distorted it's generally down to mis-shaped polygons.

You mention that your'e using a subpatch level of 30.
That's, er, huge.

The default setting for a subpatch cage is 10, even this is too high for most renders. It looks from your model (you don't state wether this model has reflection applied), that there is a fair amount of distortion around your rear wheel arch. It looks as though you're using more control points in these areas than neccessary.

Distorted polygons can also be caused by the subpatch cage being too low - please see the examples below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

As for reflection, there are many ways to reflect an image in LW, I'll describe just one of them.

There are no lights in this demonstration scene!

The image is made with ray trace reflection and radiosity only.
The sky is created from a luminous sky dome and the bright reflection in the car body is created from a 100% luminous 4 point polgon placed above the car and out of range of the camera.

The reflection options on the surfacing tab are set to a very high value (around about 90% giving the paintwork an almost chrome like quality).

The reflection blur setting (surfaces environment tab) is set to 12% to give a slightly more realistic reflection.

You can go further than this using fresnel shaders and/ or a gradient texture to give a greater level of reflectance depending on incidence angles etc.

Hope this has been some use to you.

ps The first time I saw the simple luminous polygon routine used for high gloss reflections was in the book Lightwave Applied (V6.5 & 7). This is also where I grabbed the initial car model for the demos below.

Happy rendering.

:)

Good! As long as you're not reading what you aren't supposed to read, ignore me replying to your post, then we can all continue to not see and reply to what we aren't supposed to..
