any tips to fix this ugly mesh? it is the rear end of an Audi TT. cant figure out why the un-subpatched mesh is more smooth than the subpatch mesh. any suggestions as to why this is happening?
How come are you working with Tris? It's really difficult to see what's going on in that screenshot. The mesh seems overly dense and you've got huge variations in the resoultion of the mesh which would be a nightmare to join up. Are you following a tut?

is there a way not to use triangles? when i patch, it just does it.
I've got some tips here which might help you out http://www.suture.net/tutorials/modeling/page10.shtml
Also Splinegod has a free tut at the bottom of this page which is really helpful

Make sure u have Quadrangles selected in ur General Options settings.
Hit the o (lower case) key.

is there a way to convert tri to quads after i have already done it?
'Reduce Polygons' might help. Otherwise try a search of flay.com's plugins.
good thing you've still got the spline cages, right?
don't fret, doing things over is usually faster / easier and ends up better looking.
And this car tutorial is amazing, I'm doing it right now
