View Full Version : How to create all of those floral designs...

Hello,
I am making a feathered mask, (at least I hope I am:D) and so far I have the simple model. I'd like to make the upper portion of the mask seem somewhat embossed and designed with a floral pattern.

I've attached a few images to show better what I'm after.

I'd like to know the best route to take in doing this. I've imported an EPS of the design I wnt on the mask, but am having trouble fusing it with the original model, in a respectable manner.

I've tried a UV, with bump maps and such and so far, I'm not convinced I'm doing it right. I'd like the design picture below to be on the upper portion of the mask, also pictured below.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Maybe a way to do it would be to stencil or drill it in. Just an idea

Hey guys,
Thanks for the suggestions and links. For some reason, the plug-ins won't load. So I don't know if that'll work or not.

I remember a tutorial some time ago concerning putting bumps and indents onto a sub-patched, round surface. Any chance anyone remembers this tute?
Thanks.

TrueArt did a plugin called true bump which used an image file to displace a mesh.

It would require increasing the amount of geometry. You might consider using bump or normal maps.

I would copy the head geometry into another layer and freeze it.
Use the floral design to stencil or cut it as John suggested. Extrude
it slightly and cut/paste it back into the original layer. It will fit the head perfectly.

I'm sorry, when you say stencil it out, do you mean like a Solid Drill?
I gave that a quick try and it looks like a good idea, I just have to spend more time on that.

I initially did with bump maps and was not happy with the results; I don't know what a normal map is...

Thanks for the help.

Theres been some good comments about possible solutions. I would use it as the basis to do some digging around in the manual for terms like stencil etc. :)

You can try to go back to your original plan but do a displacement - which uses subdivision surfaces to create real bumps on the object based on an image, gradient or procedural:

For your UV map take the vector mask and make it into black over white by coloring it then rasterize it. Then, give it a blur.

Use that as an image map to displace the object.

Look at some of the new videos for LW 9 on displacements with nodes.

(Just make sure and turn Mip Map to off for that image in the surface panel.)

You can also use the normal displacement on the object properties if you want to use layers.

Your object render subdivision level will have to be set to something like 50 - 100 to get the fine detail.

Damn Richard, you're a well of good info.
That's exactly what I'd needed and has me moving in the right direction.

Thanks as usual for your help.

Just picking up what I can as I go along. :)

Hope that it works for you. Let us know how it turns out.

Hey Richard,
I've been at it for long time and the initial tests have me where I want to be, with just some tweaking in the size and placement of the displacement maps.

I attached a couple of images to show how far you've help me come. Thanks a heap for the help.

Hey nice job with it. That first angle just looks awesome!

It was a good tip. :)

Just one question - how easy is it to freeze the object with normal map applied?

Just Save Trans (formed) Object. Why do you need to freeze it?

VTA , nice work so far.

The reason those suggested plugins would not load is that they are windows only and i see from your sig line your on a Mac. Some people just don't really completely read posts and miss this little detail.

Maybe LilWolf will convert these plugins to Mac for us.

Since the object is not in Layout, I might want to export exactly that (high poly) geometry to another program.

That would be super :)
