Can anyone give me tips to Making a Glass Logo?
1. I have the logo in Illustrator and don't know how to get it into LW8.
2. Being a neophyte, I don't know how to make glass in LW8 (like in Carrara where I just apply a Shader.)
any tips would be much appreciated.

In Lw9.2 they have the new material nodes. Otherwise you can do it in Lw8. Do a search for glass or air polys.
To get the illustrator file into modeler save it as an .ai file and use the EPSF Loader. This will load a flat poly that you can extrude and/or bevel depending on your needs.

Thanks for the ai tip!

Top of the forum page are a series of menus. You can search for threads here on the glass subject. There have been plenty.

This may be quicker, checkout my pdf is has a few links reguarding glass (pre-nodal though).

would that be anything like the dummy button Im looking for? haa haa
are you saying 9.2 would be much easier to do glass?

thanks for the PDF, awsome stuff...
does pre-nodal mean the glass tutorial links are dated if using 8 or higher?

To get realistic glass in pre-LW9.3 you have to go through a process of making "air polygons", which is basically a copy of the object on top of itself, with the polygons turned inwards so that when the rays pass through them they mimic air.
Copy your object in modeler, place the copy into another layer, hit the f key to flip the polys, apply a new surface to them (call it "air"), and give the air surface a refraction index of 1.001. Then copy the copied object onto the original. Just don't hit the "merge points" button.
In LW9.3 you just use the dielectric node and you don't have to go through that whole process.

Yeah as Voriax so eloquently and concisely pointed out. :)
You still have to tweak but the material nodes give you a good starting point.

Means pre- 9.0 when nodes were included. Usually means using layers as you have in 8.0 but there was even a time before layers. :)

Thanks, that breakdown is really straightforward....Im working on it.
(might be a vote for an upgrade too though!!!!)
Challenge with this logo being glass is there are some broad surface areas and some not....still don't know if it will work while maintaining readablity....
I attached the old logo if anyone cares to look at it + source files
