Here's a Dock Development being working on for the company’s portfolio.

I have loads of things I want to change but thought id post it now as a WIP.

By the way any one I haven responded to in my other posts I will soon just been up to my eyes in it.

Comment welcome about it, e.g. water reflections

Georgously done building, nice undistracting sky.

But the water looks like the canal was filled with mercury, and the waves like a supertanker just went past at warp factor 9!

Please tone that down a bit!

Great work.

The architecture all looks good. The only thing that looks strange to me is the person sitting on the bench looks unnaturally stiff. Probably a wee detail and unimportant but like I said, the only thing I saw that stood out.

Overall it looks good. But, there are a two things I would change.

The balconies on the first floor look like they could pose a danger to pedestrians. They're at just the right height to bean people... :)

Maybe get rid of the first floor balconies and add entrance doors instead?

I'd also like to see some more green, maybe some trees, and a few shrubs. It looks a little sterile with all that brick and concrete.

And, I don't know if you saw him, but there's a shifty looking guy on a bench. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll be implementing all of them in the next version.

It's looking good. Zander is right, could use some greenery. Might put in some planters near the benches and maybe alongside the buildings (you put ivy on the buildings and I'll slap you...) You might change the sidewalk pattern to a herringbone or basketweave. And you might consider putting awnings over some of the windows; the walls look pretty bare to me.

The only problem I see (other than the water) is that the roof needs tiling or shingles.

The person sitting on the bench is kind of boring, I think. You should have an alien or a giraffe or purple dinosaur sitting there. Everybody does people. <runs away cackling madly>

Btw, I like the lighting. What kind of lighting rig did you use? Did you render using radiosity?

Lude

Lighting is made up of the fallowing:

- - - -
Ambient light at 10% light blue.

Backdrop Radiostity using a gradient of blues from very light getting darker at 150%.

and 2 sun lights – both distant
1 for diffuse and another for Specular, ramped this one up to make is sunny without very strong shadows.
- - - -

There will be green stuff going in but now I’m tempted to put in a big f off ivy - lol

People are a pet hate of mine - especially 2D stuck on ones. Might take them out completely, they look like the living dead.

There are roof tiles just need to mess about with the settings and as for the paving I’ll look at it last :)

Right now, changing railings to more modern wave type design. Oh and putting in blinds.

What about the highlight on the dock wall has anyone any comments about them?

Forgot - water will be changed but if you thing it looks mercury now have a look at a test gone very wrong.

I’m making a bit of a job out of it trying to make it look nice and not like our N. Ireland Dark Cold water (might put in some beer tins and a shopping trolley :D ).

Lude, where is that development? Dublin is having it's dockland redeveloped.. but I see you you wrote "N. Ireland" somewhere?

The reason I ask is because I'm about to begin some work on the Dublin Dockland for the proposed LUAS extension down there, and I was thinking we might possibly be able to benefit each other in some ways...

Anyway, it's nice to see at least one other fellow Lightwaver in Ireland.

People are a pet-hate of mine too, they are needed for perspective, but they always look out of place, I'm considering using an 'ergoman' type charachter, just to say: "This is the scale of the environment, if you want to see people, go for a walk"

and yeah, you need the shopping trolleys ;)

This is a portfolio piece and not actually going into development. The buildings are base on real designs. Placing them along a dock wall was to get a really nice shot with reflections and usage of seating that had been built.

Visit it here for close-up seat.

There should be an update to this image going up in a day or so.

As for benefiting each other in some ways, what did you have in mind? I’m interested in working with others but their really aren’t too many Lightwaver’s in the country well not that I’ve met anyway.

There’s more work on the board here if you want to have a look:
http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5950&highlight=lude

and at:
http://www.netramedia.com/viz/

It’s mostly housing developments so that’s why the dock dev’s been put together. It will increase the scope of it.

What about you omeone, have you any posts on the board or a gallery online?

Anyway nice to here form you drop me a line if you want to take this contact further.

Lude.

Lude, I had hoped you were working on some projects involving the Dublin docklands redevelopment scheme.

A lot of other cities around the world have collaborative groups with the target of generating 3D models of their city, achieved mainly by sharing and cooperation. I dont see this happening in Dublin for a while, but I had hoped we could do something similar.

Anyway, yeah, you are the first ever other LW user I've seen from Ireland, I will be posting a WIP for C+C later today.

Good luck with the portfolio!

Hey omeone np, the collaborative groups sound interesting but what are they going to do with the 3D Cities?

Anyway people this is my last test for this project before final render. If anyone's got any other/new comments let me know now.

I think it's finished but it's always good to get a kick up the *&^ saying you should do this and what about that etc.

3D models of cities have endless uses :) , I presume the groups sell them in a similar fashion to the Ordanance Survey .

That render is looking really good, the only thing I could suggest (after a loooong look) would be maybe to crank up the intensity of some of the faked water caustics on the dock wall and decrease the scale of the texture as you have gone for much smaller ripples on the water this time.

Yeah had a look, think your right omeone. Will give that a tweak.

What about the people - I think the blur works well. It makes them less like the fat controller, oh he’d be class to put in beside your tram – lol.

Had a look at your tram – really cool, couldn’t think of any improvements. If anyone’s wondering it’s here:
http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7622

I really should be saying this under your thread but trying to be quick. Can’t wait to see it on some tracks with a ground to cast shadow on.

Water now very good, everything excellent - but I have to disagree with the suggestion of increasing the caustics intensity - if anything I'd like to see it reduced to something much more subtle.

I used to know an architect, who was always a little upset at how clean and conventional the people in his drawings were meant to look - he would occasionally try and stick a home;less person in, and the clients always hated it! He said that pretty much any ethnic mix was accepted, as long as they looked properous.

Wow! Great improvements! I like what you've done with the buildings. The two different type of bricks look great, they add a lot of visual interest.

The bottom floor balconies look more solid. I like the "bump-out" under that third-floor (or would that be 2nd-floor?) balcony.

And, I like the way you solved the people problem. :)

Lude

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think I’ll make the caustics smaller but not alter there intensity (sort of an in-between) I want people to notice little details like that which their not getting form some other companies.

I thought the blur on the people was good to, though I might tone it down a littlie bit on the men. As for sticking in a homeless person I can guaranty people here would hate it to. I might try a dog or something – maybe a duck.

nice work - the new rail and street (dock?) lights are great.

Yeah, I've been thinking a good bit more about that caustics suggestion I made... there is definitely something about that wall, but I cant put my finger on it.

I suggested the caustics cos dacing lights kind of have a primal attraction for the eye, and I think they'd add a little extra, but in reality they would onyl have high intesity for the first 6 inches above the water line, except on exceptional days (and rarely get them in Ireland !).

Maybe it's the dark patches that were putting me off...

anyway dont get me wrong I think it's great work, I'd love to get to a similar level of output someday, thanks for the comments on the Tram, I'm pretty happy with it for my first properly modelled object.
