Hello DiedonD,
Yes I had a go a number of years back regarding traditional animation. I spend a couple of years ago at the University of Ulster in Belfast playing with a tradition approach. Its perceptive of you to identified this.

A year after graduation I got a call from Disney if I was interested in a start-up idea in Orlando, Florida for project called the Disney Institute. I played a bit there with some classical tradition animation for about 4 years.

My hat goes off to chaps who can stay at that specialized field. I loved the classical heritage its foundation is built on. This I use in all approaches regardless of the medium.

I like so many other areas of animation from background to 3D visualization I was never going to knuckle down to one specialty.

Heres today sketch, using once again that gestural approach, the foundation of so much classical tradition animation.

Wow that looks great!

Of course the best way to view a mural is to see it in person.

OK....update on mural. I've nearly finished. Carlo who works with me in the content department has been kind enough to record the Mural process. So here is some more material.

Heres is the ladies rest room. I spent some time here on Thursday night paintings these ethereal beings.

Thanks for Carlo Villarreal and Phil Cassel for taking the photos. Carlo took a lot of photos during the progress of the Mural. Phil took the finished shots on Friday.

Hello everyone,
Sorry for the lack of updates on my sketch of the day activities.

One of the things I have been preparing in my spare time has been an Exhibition in San Antonio Texas, at the San Antonio College or S.A.C..

The exhibition is to show my working process from 2D to 3D using LightWave. The official opening was this Thursday past and the exhibition of my work stays up till January 23rd.

Below is some of the work featured, there are a few hundred pieces of art or more. The LightWave work has mostly been demonstrating the Node editor. They were in the pixel region of 5000 by 4000 pixels. Thankyou to the 64 bit at work I kept the 11 final renders together. A 32 bit would have been a different matter.

The gallery space is excellent, good lighting and great staff who gave up their spare time to set the exhibition up.

My spare time since the exhibition opening a number of weeks ago, is preparing for another exhibition. Its all painting, so my spare time in the evenings and weekends are spent endeavoring to finish a certain amount of canvases.

However, the odd time in the evenings I go to a drawing class at Incarnate Word University in San Antonio. Here is a few drawings from one of the evenings.

Good to see you back doodling, hope you're enjoying these exhibitions. Hopefully your work will continue to skyrocket in value (rubs his paper plate sketch greedily). I really dig the updates to your sketches. Napkins and stray pens beware, Bluerider is loose!

Cheers,

Graham, Have just spent Sunday morning catching up with the amazing artwork here. Very inspiring... love the sense of movement and sponteneity in your work completely born of imagination.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

The exhibition work was an opportunity to really push myself both in terms of technique and in terms of narrative. So much so that by the end of it I was mentally exhausted for a week or so after the official opening.

It was fascinating to listen and read the critiques of my work. The experience was a lot of fun and I will be expanding the theme of Apocalyptic visions.

Oliver, hope everything is going well in LA.

So far, so good. Alex says 'hi'. We love LA, definitely a step up over Atlanta. The drive out was great. No Monster Munch here, but the corner gas station sells Flakes for some bizarre reason.

I was wondering, is there some way for us non-Texans to get larger prints of your work?

I was demoing LightWave 9.6 at GDC San Francisco last week at the Wacom Booth. I enjoyed the show. The quality of artist visiting the booth was impressive, the drawing skills were excellent.

I'll give more personal insights into this package when I get more time. Right now it's catch up back at the office.

Here is a sketch I did at GDC using the Cintiq with Corel Painter. Thanks Evelyn for your patience in regard to showing me the basics of Painter. Is Vancouver warming up yet ? That's Vancouver Canada of course ( sorry couldn't resist ).

Great dynamic characters and paper texture! You should illustrate Lord Dunsany's works.
BTW best drawings are always born on wrinkled, torn papers. Clean paper is just boring :)

Thanks bazsa73,
Here are some stetch notes I did last night at Reagan High, the Public Library section from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

The theme was requested, The Horse in Western Art.

These three examples where used to explain the importance of breaking down the subject to the most economic deconstruction.

It's like tracing paper, without the tracing paper. :-)

Nice.

Great works guys, I like the mood you have created Piolla. And those sketches Bluerider did, I would like to see some animation with exactly that technique. 3D is so boring ;)

DrStrik9 & bazsa73,
Thanks for the kind comments.

Below is some other examples from my workshop at the Library on the third week of my course.

The subject for that particular class was 'rider and horse'.

I was trying to find simple ways to get the attendees to understand fundamental basics then establish the main volumes of each subject. Then proceed to how they make contact with each other.

The series of classes has been a lot of fun and it's forced me to think harder about what i am trying to achieve in these classes.

OK, this was the final lesson about horses at Reagan High, Public Library.

I had fun doing this series. It always interesting trying to explain concepts and ideas to a group of people when your so used to just 'doing', anyway, heres te visaul references to my workshops.

Great gestural drawing DuneBoy! Is this done on a tablet or with real-world media?

DuneBoy
07-30-2009, 02:05 PM
Actually it was done by Graham Toms (bluerider) on of all things: a paper placemat from a restaurant. Scanning it removed the bumped texture of the paper.

Hi Duneboy,
I really appreicate you coming down and visiting my booth at ComicCon in San Diego. It was a nice break to go to the BBQ afterwards with 'Celshader' and 'photoshop guru Steve'.

Thats really funny looking at that sketch of mine you posted...........it's all clean, you took care how you cleaned it up. I'm so lazy when i do it. :)

Hey Graham,

I'm jumping into this thread only recently but enjoy seeing the gestural variations of this theme that you seem to keep perculating in your head.

What part of the world are you in right now and is this Cafe Sake a frequent pit-stop for your lunch and mid-day doodling?

bluerider
08-13-2009, 03:02 PM
Cafe Sake is in San Antonio, Texas. It one of my favorite places for eating out.

The recurring theme, yes obsessive addictive. :D

Unfortunately though when I am at work, the Cafe Sake is to far of a drive. So I go in the evenings and sometimes at weekends.

Last time I traveled was to San Diego for ComicCon, fantastic cultural event. I don't have any plans to head of anywhere soon.

Great lines and flow. Lovely to see the elements marked out that make up the whole forms too.
