Why the hell would you want to run LightWave on a server OS?

Four physical processors.

Doubt that's why here... but either way, XP or Win 2K pro won't support that many cpus?

No, XP and Win2k are only two. Win2k server is 4.

I would suggest a re-install then. I don't see why it won't run. I have access to Win2k server, but I'd rather install it on a supported os.:D

Opher, server editions are not more efficient. The OS is the payload not the engine. You are giving your CPU and memory more work to do so that it has less horsepower to run LightWave. I figured that was the reason you were doing it. I provide tech support for a software company that deals heavily with SQL server. A lot of people who come through here have the same mis-conception that a server makes a good desktop machine because it is somehow "more powerful". This is absolutely NOT the case. You are better of running XP Pro or Win 2000 Pro.

Windows 2003 server is a pretty big re-write of Win2k server. All security settings are in "deny" mode by default instead of "allow". Since LW hub uses TCP/IP, it's likely to cause problems in that area.

There are many other changes in the system that could cause problems but there are compatiblity modes that may loosen things up enough to get LW to run. Not sure though. You are probably better off getting a version of Win2k server unless you have CPU's that support hyperthreading. Then you'd have to use Windows 2003 in order for all 4 to work.

I'd guess that the dongle software might need updating also.

Thought I'd revive this thread. Did you ever get LW working on Server 2003?

2003 is actually very viable as a workstation platform because by default, the majority of services are turned off, and performance and responsiveness are supposed to be better than XP. People are using 2003 successfully as the OS for their DAWs.

We own enterprise licensing, which supports up to 8 processors. The primary problem has been that most server motherboards do not have an AGP slot. This will be resolved with the new PCI Express spec.

Thanks,
Stivan

For those interested, I installed Ligthwave [8] on 2003 Server Enterprise Edition and it seems to be running fine (in Discovery mode since I didn't attach a dongle.)

If you dont have more than 2 physical processors in a machine (HT proc doesnt count), theres no reason to go in a server os. But if have lucky, dont forget to go My computer-properties-advanced tab-performace config-advanced tab-choose aplications instead of services in background (what a server os was made for) and in aplication memory instead of system cache

also, if you want to do some network rendering,
with windows server 2003, you will be able to control more than 10 computers.

win Xp and NT can connect to 10 computers max.

Wel, you could install LW in a XP machine, and render it in a 2k3 server with 4 screamernet client (assuming you have 4 processors there)....
