I recently went to the British museum for an exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Crafts.
Great exhibition and it made me want to try to recreate some of the pieces.
I ended up with this, more of a homage than an actual recreation :hey: .

nice materials.
could however use a bit more AA

I wondered about the awful spots around the gold.
I set AA at 6, & AS 0.1. But they were still there :thumbsdow
Noticed in the "9.3 test" thread that turning on LDR helped.
So I tried that. This is the result:

it's the hdr map. that map creates the specular spots. They'll only disappear if you
a) blur the hdr significantly
b) use LDR to limit the highlights

Prospector: I cheated  there are 2 physical surfaces: the lacquer and the flecked under coat. I would have done it all in one, but I'm not that clever :thumbsdow .
Bytehawk/Matt: Yeah, I'm kinda proud of the Mother o' Pearl. I had to use IFW2 so I could displace a gradient based on incedence angle. I couldn't work out any other way (see my answer to prospector about my mental accuity).
Thanks guys for the nice words

I cheated
In 3D there is no cheating.....only doing
So... think ya can share settings?.....both surfaces :D

Well, here are the objects I originally used for the pearl.
*WARNING* You need IFW2, so I've posted a screenshot as well.
As you can see it is really quite simple. I don't do complex.
I'll sort something out to show the lacquer tomorrow. I need to get to bed ;)

The light reflection seems way overblown - but I really like where you are headed with this.

Thanks guys. The lacquer actually needs more work.
The original piece has variable transparency on 2 levels, where mine currently only has it on 1 (and there not as it should be).
Firstly if viewed head on it was thicker towards the edges/corners so the flecking could onlt be seen in the centre of a face. That I've done.
Secondly, when viewed from obtuse angles it would too thick to be able to see the underlying surface. That I have to add. I'll just add a multiplier to the present absorption by incidence. Work of a couple of minutes, I'd guess.
I just got a bit carried away wi' the MoP.
Greg: Yeah i should dial down the saturation on the MoP somewhat, I just got carried away :jester:

As grandmaster Colkai once said in another thread that kind of slipped my mind at the moment:
"Wheee!"
That looks fantastic. Materials are beautiful but I can't understand what you've got it sitting on/floating above.
Come on man, get a proper table or floor in there!
And thanks for sharing the setup.

Iain: this was to test the materials. I have a version that is in an environment, but it takes nearly twice the time and I have to use F9s to test this as FPrime doesn't like these surfaces.
I know but it would just read better with a stool or something to ground it. Even reflect those painstakingly built materials a tiny bit.
As I said in SB1's rocket thread, just tell me to pi** off if you like :)

:D , nah! it's all good. I know what you mean and it was the first thing I did once I was happy wi' the work so far.

Oops, i forgot to send the lacquer and glitter.
I'm sure that I could do this in one surface... but I didn't :D

Somebody take pity on a poor underprivileged Waver. What does IFW2 stand for?
