I'm trying to make a robot who would be used in a commercial to present some products. It has to look emotional, robot outside but human inside. These are some shots.

Looks like your going for the "I-Robot" look. Nice so far.

Yes, I am going for the I-robot look. I really didn't know how to make her face look human using some kind of plastic or metal as a material. Since she has to make facial expressions the only logical thing was to make her face out of silicon like in the movie.

very nice man!
have you seen the music video by bjork?. I forgot the song title though. they composite bjork's face to a robot body, but I think it has the look that you're after

While I was looking at the picture my seven year old brother comes up beside me and says "What are you making? Something from I, Robot?" :D
So you must have done something right:D
The only crit I have at the moment is that in the picture where you can see the shoulders the head seems to be floating. It may be just me, but my brain doesn't put the head and shoulders together with the metal and tubes to make one complete object.
Nice work so far though

Haha, Looking GOOD! Great work on that robot. My only suggestion is that you make the eyes close at a little more natural angle, right now they are pointed down so much that it looks a little unnatural (then again its a robot). good work!

@jackman - thanks, yes I have seen the video by bjork and I love it. It was one of my research videos for this project so I have made similar skull design when you look at it from the profile. ( see atached video )
@Skinner3D - thanks, yes I am aware that there is not much going on in the neck area, should have put more stuff in it but don't have time. See the animation, maybe the head sticks better when in motion. I don't know.
@StevieB - thanks, have you noticed that the eyelids are just a little bit transparent at the their rim ? You can see the eyeball through there. I thought it would be a nice touch since her face is made out of silicon. I have used Sigma II material for her face. It is a very fast SSS shader in 9.3.
There is a test animation of her in black design (hopefully in the next post since I am having trouble uploading it) but the client didn't like her that way so I went with white which is a shame since all humanoids are white and black would be more interesting. Also you can see a part of final animation where she is presenting some products behind a panel. There is a lot going on on the panel so you don't actually pay much attention to her while she is behind it. I will post final work when the commercial is on air.

W0W, Impressive! It was very nice when the head turned around and you could see all the electric lights. HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU DO THAT!!! Haha, seriously though I want to know (if you know any tutorials for how to animate lights [as in turning off and on] please send me there)!
Great Job, and fantastic detailing!

Right click and save target as... When the requester comes up you will see it ends in .htm, change it to .mov and you'll be able to play it when it's downloaded.

I love how you have speakers built into her butt cheeks. Very clever! The rest of her design is cute too. Great job!

Agreed, but I do think they are a little oversized for the rest of the model ...
Otherwise no crits here.

@StevieB-Hi, I am glad you liked it. It is easy to animate lights in her head. There are 3 or 4 surfaces each with different color and I have enveloped the luminosity channel of each surface to fire on and off like there is something clever going on in there. I'm not on Skype because I'm on vacation, but sadly I had to pop in my office yesterday (400 km drive plus ferryboat) to make an urgent job for another client.
@warrenwc-Thanks ! First I tried some test animations with MC data, allthough some of them looked cool you can't really tailor it to the specific needs of this project where timing is everything so I had to keyframe it all.
Thanks everybody, hopefully it will air in september, 10th so then I will post final work.
As for the breast, my only intention was to give her female characteristics, but they might be a bit smaller, I tried that but didn't manage to get a natural look, I think I have to practice my modeling skills :)

By no crits I meant FANTASTIC by the way ... ;)
Personal choice on the breast size, in the first renders you showed I think they're oversized, but in the animations I didn't notice, so go figure :)

I really like it, the surface is very cool. But how is the rendertime though, thought it would be pretty high since it is using subsurface scattering,..

Have come back to this animation a few times over the last few days, it gets better with each watch ...
Music, synching and animation gorgeous and stick in the brain ..
I agree that the black one is my fave - looking forward to the 10th! ;)

Really good animation, my only crit is the eyes the lens seems just a tad big, especially in the stills. The plastic of the skin looks good

What's it going to take? A really bad robot WIP (mine) ?

Archijam, thanks for reminding me. I am totally terribly sorry I didn't post it earlier. Here is the final piece. The sound is not from the final commercial because the final one is totally different, I didn't like it because it had no rhythm and so it didn't work well with the animation IMHO.
There is also a screenshot of a robot in higher resolution.
Damn, I am having trouble uploading video, will try in next post.

There will hopefully be another commercial with the girl robot presenting similar products. Do you have any good ideas on how to do the next 15 second commercial ?
Cheers,

So GOOD!
Still love the dancing clip from earlier in the post .. but from the looks they like their advertisments short and full of selling points, no? There was barely a break in text (or voiceover), which I assume is a requirement from their side.
A billy jean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR_ZB1O3f9U) light-up floor perhaps ;) ?
Too late for good ideas .. night!

Apparently Svedka vodka has a magazine ad campaign using a robot that looks very similar to yours and the ones from I, Robot. I almost thought it was yours actually, remembering it from a week or so ago in the forums, so I came back to check.

Yes, it is all the same generic android design but still they are different from each other. Imagine those robots if as they were humans with skin instead of white plastic. They would look very different to us but since they all cary the same design idea we percieve them as same. They are different characters with the same design.
Here is a high resolution render.
archijam
09-24-2007, 02:55 AM
That is indeed a high res render ;).
If one has just seen the vid or has it clearly in mind, then the poster works well, but if not it is maybe not clear that the screen is floating in front, is it being held etc etc
I think you should make the screen slightly more transparent, as the position of the hands and pose of the body behind are not so obvious ..
Regarding I, robot, your model stands out enough from the others for me (tho the black version was sweet), I would emphasise the fact that you can see the inner workings of yours, fan, lights, speakers - in the next spot you do. This way it feels like you are learning more about the character ...

I agree the poster is not well staged. Actually the client wanted a hi-res snapshot of the advert to use as a poster to save money. But since at this specific frame her head was off shot and she had her eyes closed and arms in a funny position and the aspect ratio of the poster is different then PAL I had to modify it a bit but thats all I could do given the time/money frame.
You gave me an excellent idea with light up floor. I just might use it if the next robot advert comes along.

The adverts are very slick, well paced and stylishly done. One thing that struck me was that we don't see enough of the robot's face at the beginning but I love the close up at the end:D

Thanks for the comments.
Yes the beginning does look odd because you don't see the robots face but that was done on purpose because nobody would look at the products but at her face and the client wouldn't sell much. I guess this is one of the laws of advertising.
While working on this advert me and my wife had our first baby so I am quite happy how it turned out. Those who have kids will know what I mean. :)
