View Full Version : Have to say, GI in LW is soooo much better!

I remember a time when I just couldn't use GI in LW because it was just too slow, even overnight. I would try it, come in next morning and it wouldn't have made a dent.

At just after 3am last night I set three renders going at 1280x1024, 541,949 polygons, Interpolated Final Gather, 300 rays per evaluation, 4 bounces, 0.028 interpolated AA, DOF, real lens, came to look this morning expecting it to be still going, and they had all finished!

According to the times on the file properties, they finished at:

4:11am
5:53am
7:02am

I'm very impressed! Thank you NewTek, keep up the excellent work!

The lighting needs more work, I don't like the hot spot on the far wall above the window, but here they are (half size).

Cheers
Matt

...and I am waiting for future when CPUs will be so fast that cheated interpolated GI won't be needed.. just traditional full quality GI at reasonable render time..

Heee good to see you are happy with it Matt (Quad core is helping too ;)) but frankly I'm not sure you even need radiosity for this scene :)?

Nice clean renders!

I LOVE the revamped radiosity/raytracing in 9.2. Subpixel displacement and handling of high polycounts could be better but overall I am very pleased with Lightwave's progress.

However, I rarely do beauty passes these days. IMO Newtek really needs to add a radiosity buffer, along with robust pass management and a totally redone read-to-tweak PSD exporter. All compatible with G2!

Nice images Matt. On a side note and I'm not sure if this has been talked about before but I'm doing Material experiments right now and I have found that while using FG and turning on Limited Region the render times increase. I did a Limited Region render=16 minutes... whole frame=11 minutes. I need to try it with the other GI options.
