after using this program for 4 days, i have made a duck... let me know what you think, and please tell me what else to do with it.
surtenly i am not as good as you guys are modelling, but this duck, you have to admit it, is a very nice modell from a guy that have only been modelling for 4 days!

Laying colors on it is actually pretty simple. You just need to assign surface names to the various parts you want different colors/texturing on.
To do this, select all the polygons you want to assign to a surface and then hit the letter "q" on your keyboard. This will open the "Change Surface" window. Here, you can give the selected polys a surface name, such as "beak" or whatever, and select a color from the color picker.
Now, this doesn't create all the fancy surfacing that you'll want in your final version of the duck, but it will let you set colors to help distinguish the various parts of your model.
You can see an example of this in the first part of our "Surfacing Basics" tutorial - Located Here (http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/surface/cola/index.html)
Hope this helps!

i would say, go on! i learned lightwave just by hittin every button i could find and check the results... i guess it's easier to start with non-organic objects, they're much easier ;) try to give the duck a surface and open it in layout! don't focus on just one of the programs, use them both together is my advice

Yeah, I totally agree, consentrate on both night--hawk, hmm, if i come to you now/or later, would you mind helping me get a little quick start then??
pleeeease?:P:D :D :D
What you should do also is add smoothing to the texture. This will make all the individual polys merge together ok, but it does have its limits!
to activeate go into the suface pannel again, and this time hit the box at the bottom called smoothing, it does exactly what it sais on the tin... the angle is the maximum angle it will "bend'' round. higher may solve a few things, but can screw up other bits.
ok for a first model, and it wasnt a spaceship or a human!!!

Now the duck look like this:

can anyone tell me what they mean by this:
Create a ball "Shift-o". Use the default settings "n" except orient it to the Z axis.
i am a little bit unsure what they mean by orient it to the z axis...
this means that the point of the sphere will allign along the Z axis, which is front back. by pressing N, it will bring up the numeric pannel, and if it is the first time, it wil be default to 1m sphere, square or whatever alligned along the Z axis, and if it isnt just click on the Z button.
ie hit O then n then click on the Z button and hit enter.

it was really fun when i first started lw .. i didnt bother reading the manuals .... lw6 had two of em
i just sat there clicking buttons and discovering what they did, and then decided to model an airplane... never gave up and it ended up pretty decent i think
a good way to start is by choosing a subject you really really wanna do, then just keep working on it.. trying all the tools and then never give up until you are pretty satisfied or learn something that makes you want to try something else :)
enjoy!
