View Full Version : Will SE work on a Mac Mini
We just received SE at school, and I was wondering if the latest Mac Mini would run the software. With Windows installed of course.
If not, I will have to convince someone to purchase me a PC after I have spent 5 years explaining that I need Macs.

I haven't run it on one personally, but it should work.
You might need to lower the output window quality though. I'm not sure how strong the GPU is on the mini.
This only effects the onscreen preview and is still better than most other editors preview, so it's not that bad.

Seriously.. why would you want to run a PC editor on a Mac based system?
If you are looking at the relatively high price of FCP Studio, then Express makes a great deal of sense. It still does most of what Final Cut does save for Batch Capture and some limited keyframing.
The retail cost is only $299.00 If you are at a school site, the education price is only $99.00 Btw The Academic Price of FC Studio 2 is $499.00

I use both the Tricaster & FCP for production work in a Educational setting.
I try to use the best tool for the job at hand. :hey:

Because if you use Boot Camp it's not a Mac based system. It's just another computer running Windows on Intel parts.
The reason why I want to do this;
I already have 7 Applied Magic ScreenPlays, 3 Macs running FCP and 4 Macs running FCE. If I can add a 15th edit bay without changing computers formats from a Mac to a PC and give my students yet another option for completing their projects, then I need to do that.
Also, we run Ultra2 on the current old PC, so I still have to use a computer as a PC for that. With either a new PC or a Mac running Windows, I can use SE and Ultra2. But, I want to make sure that whatever Mac I purchase, or PC I build will work for what we need.
I also use the Tricaster and wish that we could easily move files to the Mac for time-crunching and DVD output. But that is another subject for another time.
I'm not sure that it would work on a Mini because the graphics card might hold you back.

Well there are strong rumors that the mini will disappear soon. It's a great little computer but it has not had an update in quite awhile and rumor mongers are saying that Apple will discontiune the line. I think the biggest roadblock would be the graphics chip in the mini. You would be better off going with an iMac 17" or 20". New iMacs are due out in August so you might find some good clearance type pricing on older iMacs.

I heard about the disappearing mini. We are probably going to rebuild our 5 year old PC Avid system and make it a SE and Ultra computer. My training did not include Avid, so it is a 5 year old edit system that does not get used for anything except green screen applications. Just need to gut the case and rebuild its innards.
