Music Backgrouns Question

I have a musical interlude that plays during the intro of a video, then I want to turn down the sound but keep it playing in the background while I play a clip of somebody talking over the top of the background music ... then as the person talking leaves the screen I want to turn the background music back up to the foreground. Is there a way to do this w/o cutting the audio clip to manually lower the sound in the control tree? When I cut the audion clip, it skips a little where it is cut ... so there must be an easier way, right?

Select the audio clip, make spline adjustments in the Control Tree using Influences to smooth the transitions, done. :)
