I've just pulled in a couple of mpg's from the Sony DCR-SR290E and there is no sound coming from SE.
The format is PAL DV. and comes from HDD in camera
I've played the same file with VLC and it's OK but with Elecard mpeg player still no sound like SE.
I'm afraid I am no sound man and would be just happy to hear something, I think it may have something to do with 5.1 Dolby surround?

*UPDATE*
After crawling on the net I found that this type of Sony camcorder (and all the others in this range using internal HDD) have a problem with 5.1 Dolby Surround codec and that it's difficult to convert the sound to straight 2 channel stereo, even with Sony's software. Some people report a loud interference noise over the soundtrack!
I found an answer by using VLC player and converting the mpg file with their player.

I have learned a lesson with this saga - do research before purchase!

Did you enable SE Prefs AC3 button towards the bottom?

At least you have found VLC will convert for you.

I just purchased the hotest selling HD camera from Panasonic, the HDC TM300. It is the only 3 chip HD camera in the prosumer segment with 32 gigs of built in flash memory, another 32 gigs of flash card memory, a view finder and a host of other features and produces amazing HD video in almost any light for less than US$1200. This Camera is sold out everywhere and hard to come by.

Ok, so the problem is This camera like most HD cameras coming out today, produces its sound in Dolby 5.1 and that is not compatible with SpeedEdit. So, what do I do now?

I will look into the VLC Player conversion option suggested here, but since more and more of the top video cameras are coming out with Dolby 5.1 surround sound as their standard and since Dobly 5.1 is now the standard for home theatre systems, It would seem to be in NewTek's best interest to add compatibility with Dolby 5.1 sound, or be left behind in the video editor HD and 5.1 sound world which represents the future of high performance video and sound.

This is what all movies are now done in anyway - why not join the party? Please send suggestions for seemless conversion of the sound segments without alot of complex steps. Thanks
