This is my creation and me, at the park. The egg comes from my
avatar and old trailer (http://lgmfilms.com/images/EggsMen.mov)
it was more of a lighting test.

10 Lights
320 x 500 res
10.4 Seconds to render

C&C very welcome

Which one is you??" :)

Sorry just joking, the lighting looks good.

I agree, though maybe a tiny bit to bright on the egg's head, comparing to the light on your shoulders. I watched your trailer. That's excellent. How did you go about getting the matrix effect with the bullets?

Gabman6
06-24-2003, 03:41 AM
yeah... i still wasnt sure about lighting. All i did do was just add glow. Heres without it. And yes i am the egg, hehe.

as for the old-worn out Matrix bullet-time effect, i just used particles, with a refraction.

Which you think is better the one on top or bottom?
Anyone feel free to comment:confused:

I am completely stumped on how to dirt up around this pillar to make it look like its actually attached to the ground. Help please.

This is all i have so far

I watched the trailer and was really impressed! Excellent work! As for the composite photo, the biggest problem is that the photo was taken in direct sunlight with no reflected light to soften that shadow while the shadow on the model is not intense (dark) enough. Are you using a distant light to illuminate the model? You might want to try a lower ambient light setting. These are just thoughts. I can't wait to see the next film!

Gabman6

Im glad your all excited for my best short yet. I cant get shadows to get darker. I already lowered my ambient to 0. My lights (10) are all spotlights, one of them only has a Shadow Map. There should be an option to set "Shadow Darkness" or something

nice photo, who is the freek next to the egg guy!! (only jokin)

try adding grime to the pillar, and give the mess on the floor a direction to go it, ie which way would cars be driving past and then make the dirt follow that.

yeah i watched the trailer too, now answer my question nghh, where did u get the Red Alert music from??? and can i have a copy (as u didnt by it of westwood)

Man quit talking about my friend, gosh ill have to arrest you with my Egg authority! :D But, i tried getting grimme around the pillar, just having some problems in that department. The ground is upgraded. (the pic is old). Should i also add skid marks? It is a garage. so i dont really know what to do about that. As for the music.... i have it. Just email me (gabman6@yahoo.com , no bulk please.hehe......seriously though) if you want it.

Just wanted to respond to your lighting problems with the composite of the egg and you; your first render is the best so far, but there are some inconsistencies in the highlight and shadows of your egg compared to you. There is an intense light on your body a sharp contrast between light and dark and the egg should have the same but doesn't. You have no variation of light on the vest. I know black consumes all light but in real life there will be a variation in contrast. Try a specular map, or adjust to a dark blue. You can also add more color to your light source it looks to white. If that doesn't work bring the image into PS and adjust contrast levels.

Hey thanks for the tips Broncos30 (as well as all of you for all of your help). I took all the shadowing techniques, but i kinda gave up on that me and egg thing already (done test) but i did use it for the main project after noticing the vests werent as visible. Heres the latest. Still have a feeling about the grimme and shadows.

-Edit-

Hmmm this bright background is hiding the colors of the vest.

I like the first composite posted. I also liked your anim, very cool :)

As far as adding grime to the pillar, I have two suggestions:

1). Add a some noise to the pillar. - procedural texture in the color channel. Fractal noise, black...Freq 6, Cont 1, Sm. Power 1. Size maybe something like X .001m, Y 2m, Z .001m. And then set some Y falloff. You'll also likely want to play around with the opacity of this layer. But that's something I like to do to add dirt to objects that touch the ground.

Play around with the settings to find what'd work best for your scene.

2). Do something similar to the ground...(place a dirtied texture there with falloff). It looks like you kinda did that, but it maybe looked a bit too lumpy...I'm not sure though.

the environment looks like it's inspired by the movie The One with Jet Li. Am I right?

I like it.

Yes, you are correct. I really hope i get this done by the deadline of Nov. So far i have still have a do. I still have to do the jail scene also. I have the scenes completed, i just need that darn animation. Oh and some voice casting...maybe.

i got one newbie question.
how did you make the bullets fly threw the air in that cool way?
and can you convert them to a real life movie?

Gabman6
07-08-2003, 03:57 PM
The way i did the bullets was i hand-animatedt them (of course) so i could get the bullets to fly into areas. As for the trail, i used particles with a small refraction. Im not really sure what u mean by convert. But it is possible to put them into reall life footage.

I love it :D . Real funny. Great job with it. BTW, how long did it take to make? And how long is real movie?

07-17-2003, 12:22 AM
I've seen you're trailor before. Me thinks it was on CGTalk. But I absolutely love it! Worn out or not, I'm sorry, I still love the bullet-time effect. :D

I can't wait for the final product. ;)

Gabman6
07-17-2003, 03:15 PM
Hey, you got a good eye there, maybe youve seen it in CGTalk? Well the real movie will be maybe as long as the jail scene and garage scene in The One. The final product will be out in Nov as you may have been waiting a long time for.

shame the trailor link in now dead :'(

but the second pic of your upcoming short makes it look like the eggs are floating on those stair, kinda sam fisher style

Gabman6
07-22-2003, 03:50 PM
Yeah... sorry bout the link, there were some....legal issues......*cough* RIAA *cough*(the music to be specific, ill try to get uncopyrighted music and get the link back up). But the shadows in the pic are bad... actually, not there. But now i refined it and its cooler and better. I finally started to get the video off the scene. Latest:

Still not sure about lighting...

im not sure, maybe the shadows falling off to the left off the egg men, and prahaps a bit mre crisp, not really sure, what is the floor made of?

Gabman6
07-26-2003, 01:57 PM
Look at all the replies. Wow... the movies goin great. Thanks for all the support. The animation that is now down, was just a reel of what the eggs can and will be doing, something to tell you what their all about. But sadly i might be late for the Nov thing. I have to side off and help create a demo reel for LGM films. I will try and get that deadline!

10 lights is just plain too many. You would be better off with just one distant light from almost directly above. Actually I would try that first, and just raise the ambience until the shadows match the guy to the left. For that matter, the ambience intensity setting is almost exactly what you would find in a shadow darkness setting... Except maybe that it can't be applied to seperate lights... Oh well, hopefully I've helped. Oh, and try making just a little bit of attachment to the ground with the pillar. Just a bumby little raised circular area right around the base. Actually you might try making some speratic paint the same color as either the ground or the base of the pillar cross over just a little bit. Just make a little black paint go onto the ground right around the edges of the pillar, and round out the seam between the pillar and the ground.

hi,

the pics are good, I like
the eggs in the garage, very cool :)

though I'm not sure the first (and last) pic (you and the egg)
is a real success in terms of lighting.
Think the egg should have much more stronger self-shadow on its
right side (on the left side of the image), there the compositing faking
is a bit too visible…

Little idea (maybe you already tried) : if you know or remember
the time and place where the photo was taken why would'nt you light
your egg in LW using the sky tracer plug'in so that you can get nearly the same coordinates and angle (for the hour and season) for the light,
I'm sure you would get surprising and maybe better results.

i know this is like 5 months old but its past november and i just was wondering if you got it done.

looks neat, as "The One" is one of my favorite movies, and i'm doing a project on it right now

Gabman6

I know its been a long time! Im sorry if i ...uhm.... lied.... But sadly i've been putting it way off. Rest asured i will get it done. So far i just got to the part where he says "Seize Fire!" (I know i still have a long way to go!). Its good that someone still replied on this, but i knew that me not delivering would eventually had haunted me one day.

i've just been doing some of my own "The One" work, trying to make it realistic, and i will post it soon. I was surprised to see your reply because when i went to search for Gabman6 under "Members" it showed your last reply being a long time ago. If it would help i ripped the most important action scenes off the DVD of the movie and i could post them for your reference

;)

Silly question regarding the column: have you gone into a parking garage and shot reference photos?

Also, along the lines of KissMyGrits' post, you could add a bumpy displacement map to the floor, so the edge where it meets the column is a little rougher. A bump map wouldn't do it.

I seem to recall that most garages are lit by banks of fluorescent lamps in the ceiling. Again, here's where reference photos could help.
