Well, I've been playing with lightwave a bit since I got my copy from Newtek in April. Today I just started working on a model of a beetle. Not any beetle in particular, I just wanted to see what I could put together. I do plan on obtaining good photo references, and building another beetle scene as detailed as I can.

A very nice start - if I may make a suggestion or two?
1. Tone down the colours, (reduce saturation), particularly the yellows, and the green legs. This will help a lot with realism.
2. The eyes look a bit like blue glass beads, I more segmented look would help a lot.
Possible lazy way of doing this:
a) Get a tessalation sphere, (and cut away the bottom half).
b) Select every polygon in it, and assigne texture eye_1
c) Do a very small bevel, (inset only, no shift).
d) Assign this the different texture eye_2.
The segments wont be hexagonal, but it should look OK.
I'd also suggest adding very high broad specular highlights to one of the eye textures, to emphasize the difference.
A bit of interference shading on the shell, for a strong chromatic effect, might also look good.

StevenDS,
It's looking good so far. I like that a lot.
Something that could also help is I got this preset a while ago, but don't remember from where. Maybe use it as a starting point though. If not, extra presets couldn't hurt. Just add it to your presets folder which is in the program folder for Lightwave.

Man, it's hard to believe that you did this on a Trash 80!
