Getting odd characters in text tool

This is a PC centric thing...
I need to do some mathematical symbols, so I want to get a differential symbol (∂) into the text tool. For most things, like this post, I can just bring up the Character Map, select the character I want, copy it, and paste into the app. With LW, I just get a ? in the numeric entry box of the text tool. Any suggestions?

Well, this seems to be related to UniCode (WinNT 4 and up). Special symbols such as scientific ones are located outside the standard ASCII range so LW may not be able to handle them properly. Possibly the best solution may be creating an EPS/ Ai file in a vector graphics program and then import it.
