It's 3 panes moving at highspeed on each of the 3 axis and thus revealing the underlying procedural pattern (at world coordinates).
I added also a transparency layer (with a distance to pivot gradient, this gives a sphere instead of a box in this case), you'll understand when you see it.

btw: You have to "save as" the Quicktime movie and then rename the .php file to .mov.
Quicktime handling is very weird on this board.

The .mov file is still on the dark side of flip4mac for us here in macsville! Post an Mp-4 and it will probably get through.

Wow, great effect! How did you come by this idea? Does it render fast, in other words, would it be a good alternative for hypervoxels?

Nice technique, Mike.

Sounds like a simple enough scene.
Would you considering uploading it so we can take it apart.
What's highspeed mean: I'm guessing 360d per frame.
Layers or Nodes used?
Hows the render times compare to HV's?

anyhoo...

very clever.

I'll gather the files together and upload it.
I got this idea while doing some tests with PIM, I asked the Dev if PIM could do this and he pointed me to another beta tester who already had the same idea and used it to fake volumetric lights in PIM.

So now that LW has a good AA and MB (as PIM) I thought I give it a go.

I wanted to see the LW 3D procedurals since ever hehehe!

Highspeed: from bottom to top of box within one frame. post behaviour to repeat.
In fact it's no ball, it would be a box, but I added a distance gradient to the transparency channel to make it round (and a texture displacement to displace the border).

Simple layers, but would work with everything.
It's all pretty simple, you have just to find the right spot in the 3D space of the procedural to show something interesting

Renders in 30 seconds per frame with good AA. You could also reduce the mb passes from 3 to 1 and come down to 20 seconds, but then you would loose much of the shadows of that fluffy thing.

btw, am I allowed to upload 9.2 stuff in here or only to the open beta section?

Mike,

if you are referring to assets like scene files, its best to upload those to the beta forum, since the only people who can use them are 9.2 users.

I post the mp4 here and the content folder on the beta section, everyone with 9.2 could drop by there.

[edit] Thanks Jay, did it as you said.

Aloha and thanks, Mike.

You know I didn't even notice we are in a general forum.
I'll pop over to that thread and take a look.

Aloha Mike,
Could you suggest to the PIM developer that he release quarterly updates. Even yearly status updates would be better than nothing. I've lost faith that PIM will ever be released.

I'll do. Right now PIM has grown very big (in different ways) , and all the cool rumours about it are true... and even more.
At this stage PIM can't just die in silence anymore.
Anyway, there's no sense in releasing anything right now, cause LW is undergoing heavy changes (e.g. 9.2). Makes much sense to wait a little to see which way NT is heading and what changes to the lw files and internals are coming.
