BlackMagic recently released a HDMI card for both the PC and MAC. It supports both Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premire for live capture to 1080i/p.
Any chance that SE will support this hardware for live capture? IF so that would be awesome then at least I can make use of my Sony HDR-SR1.

I was going to get an SDI card, but this is incredible! I am already using DVI to HDMI for my LCD monitors, now I can capture and output natively, this looks killer.

I would like to see NewTek roll their own HD i/o card. If you have ever tried to used the Black Magic cards you will regret it because the drivers are terrible.

Yeah, newtek should come up with a similar product, with an expresscard variant for laptop users. Imagine capturing on the field directly into speedHQ :)

Well... I haven't heard much bad about the Black Magic cards or drivers, but the most interesting thing is that the HDMI actually records better signal from some cameras, chief among these is are the Sony cameras.
For $250 it seems a great way to get good quality capture for a very low price.

I can't really vouch for that. We have a BM Multibridge Extreme PCIe for over a year now and it works as expected.
Mind you, they also update their drivers on an almost montly basis. SE with BM support would be extremely neat (and would not stress NTs hardware developments).

Mike,
What program are you using the Black Magic with now to get your video in?

Premiere Pro, since we've had that on the computer for a year now.
You could just use the included simple capturing app though for Quicktimes.

I have SpeedEdit but its not worth the price of the DVD it came on. If you want to use true HD FOOTAGE like HDcam, SpeedEDIT dosen,t support any capture cards to get your footage in or any card so u can view and edit or color correct on a true HD monitor and their is no way of get the final edit program back to real HD Deck. I guess it's ok for the low end HDV But for the real HD its a program that is useless.

they should make HDMI out so we can veiw on HD Tvs so we dont have to use 1394.

While I agree on your points I don't agree on the conclusion. It does what it says, and that it does extremely well. So well that I'm completely ditching PPro except for capturing and recording. Heck, I can edit faster on my laptop that I could on our decked out editing system with PPro.
And yes, I use it with "real" footage as well.

If you have a second DVI out, get a DVI to HDMI converter, set the second monitor to a HD res and play the viewer on that fullscreen. That should do it.

I completely agree with you Mike...
SE can and will edit not only HDV but HD footage as well...thou I agree that NT needs to add direct support for HDCam,XDCamHD, P2, DVCProHD etc....but that will come a little later....
SE even now can be used to edit 2K material...so it can edit HD and beyond....
I did try 4K...and that was little passed what my system at the moment can handle....
DVI out is good at the moment for some...it needs more improvements....
More later ;)

I did not say SpeedEdit can't handel Real HD footage. It is that you can't capture or view it in Speededit u have to purchase another edit program in order to use SpeedEDIT as a professinal Editor. IT Needs a lot of inprovement
if its to be a Real edit Program for high end productions.

Nobody said it is ;) If you look at the tech specs there is no supported video i/o except for DV/HDV via Firewire.
I do agree that there are limits... but don't blame SE for not handling something it was never meant to do ;)

I sure hope NT adds HDMI live capture for SE soon:thumbsup:

I just ordered Black Magics Intensity card. I will post more on it after I have had a chance to get it setup. Looks like I'm getting closer to using my HD video off my HDR-SR1 camcorder :)

Hi Tom
I wouldn't hope for too much, I run the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro box here, and although you can capture using it, and then use the files in SpeedEdit, there is no way of using the outputs at all, in fact you will probably find that you need to disable the Blackmagic Card, to even get SpeedEdit to launch, so you certainly wont be able to use it for HDMI output of SPeedEdit.

I sure hope I dont have to disable the HDMI card each time I use SE. I plan to just live capture with Adobe Premire for now and then convert it to a format SE can use. Hopefully in next release SE will be all that I need to do live capture using this new Intensity card.

The only thing you need to disable in a BM board is the extended video desktop which offers no DirectX acceleration (on which SE depends).

I think there was a discussion on Black Magic when it was selling for $150.00 last year around NAB.
SE is a 1.0, so expect 1.x to update the other formats.
But if the BlackMagic can become part of the VT Switcher, faster than R & D of a VTHD i/o, gettem Newtek!

Any further word on this?
I would like to be able to capture HD 4:2:2, but really don't want to add tylenol to my workflow.
If I can capture off the BM card using (whatever), and edit in SE, that would be fine.
Disabling the card to run SE would be annoying.
Does this only apply if I am using the HDMI OUT on the card? That is to say, can I capture 4:2:2 with my camera, close the capture application, then do whatever the heck pleases me with the footage in SE.

I don't see why not.

I don't see why not.
If you capture an AVI. QT with third party codecs won't work in SE obviously.
