View Full Version : Vegas EDL won't load in SE

For some reason, our edit from Vegas, exported as EDL, won't import in SE.
When i import the EDL, nothing happens, no errors, no loading, no nothing...
Could someone clarify? I attached the last EDL export.

What Vegas calls an EDL is a text version of their project format, not an EDL.
I've heard that there is a script or something if you dig around in the menus that does export a real EDL though.

Aah, thanks, i'll dig around in those menus then.

Okay, i found the Export EDL.js script in Vegas and reprogrammed it a bit so it exports FilePath and FileNames.
So, video works fine, BUT, for some reason, all audio doesn't:
This should work, shouldn't it? Then why does SE set all TimeCodeIn points to 0 when importing the EDL below?

Hmmm...just did an EDL export with a SE project and imported the EDL in new SE project, same error, video goes fine, but audio TimeCodes are all set to 0.
Is this a known bug?

We read the timecode from the file itself, not the project and since the files don't contain timecode it is starting at 0.

That's not what i meant, let me explain.
It's all the In Points of the clips that get set to 00:00:00:00, eventhough they should be set according to the data given by the EDL file.
You can see what i mean by simply doing the following:
1] drag an audio file from the filebin into the timeline
2] Cut the audio into pieces
3] Rearrange the pieces in the Storyboard mode (so it really isn't the same audio track anymore)
4] Export as EDL
5] Import as EDL
6] Open Subproject and look at mess.

Soooo...did anyone else try the above? I'd like to know whther or not this is a bug...might be handy if it is a bug to post it to the bug tracker.

If I understand what John is saying......
When a clip is imported into Speed Edit and conformed to an EDL, the in points and outpoints only get set if they exist in the timecode of the files referenced by the clip.
In the case of .wav files, there is no time code stored in the file. Since there is no timecode with the inpoint referenced in the file, Speed Edit defaults the in point to the beginning of the file.
I'm not sure this is so much a "bug" as a "feature." The software is doing what it is designed to do - it just would be more useful doing something different. That would be a good feature request - that if an EDL imported clip has no timecode, Speed Edit treats it as if it had time code starting with 00:00:00 at the beginning of the clip.

Yes, exactly, that would be handy.

Sorry, I didn't notice this thread for a few days.
I tried your EDL and it worked correctly for me. The video track was on top and each audio file was butted up all along the same area as the video.
I tested what you requested (exporting, then importing an EDL) and did find something interesting though. There is a bug, but it is something that can be worked around. The problem is that there has to be video to reference the audio tracks to, otherwise the audio bunches up at 0:00:00. I'm not positive if this this is an EDL limitation or a bug in SE, I need to research it more.
Place an image or video (a black still image, anything) in the timeline and it should work correctly.
Maybe your video track wasn't found and so the audio had no reference?

Hi there, Any chance of getting a copy of the script from you to allow us to export the edl from vegas to SE?
I'm not a programmer. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kyle

It wasn't my script. From what I remember it is included with Vegas under tools.

Yes, there is an "Export EDL" script included with Vegas.
Note that Sony themselves do NOT claim you should use this as a true EDL to move between different NLEs, they only say it can be used to export EDLs that you can later bring back into Vegas.
But, others have successfully used the Vegas EDL in other NLEs.
So, it may or may not work.
