Decided to model this for a scene I'm working on. This is modelled on Karl Stocker's (Pixeltec) model over at Sci-fi.net. I downloaded his model and put it in a background layer and used that as a template.

Unlike his though, my model is a complete sub-patch model. I did that as an exercise to improve my sub-patch modelling.

I've done a first draft of textures for it, lots more to come. Then rigging.

C&C's welcome :)

Impressive subpatching.

Yo adrain!

You did it!!!

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. That model looks great.

Did you do it all in subpatch mode, or did you switch back-and-forth between subpatch and box mode, or did you use commands like extender plus? How many total polys are we talking here? Not what it tells you in modeler, but what you get when you bring it into layout.

We play a lot of Star Wars Battlefront II on the PS2 in our house, so we see this guy all the time.

Looks great - some well crafted modelling. Are you UVing textures or going for procedurals?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback :)

As for polys, you know what? I don't know - I think it's just under the 20K mark so if it's low-poly modelling you're after, I'm NOT your man, ha ha!!

I used a lot of extender plus, extender and bandsaw Pro commands.

I've been working on improving my organic modelling skills for a few weeks now and the methods above are what I'm most comfortable with (as opposed to splines for instance which I find create more work).

Texture wise at the moment I'm using procedurals but subtlely combined with image maps.

Just so you know, guys, here is the one this is based on, downloadable from my website and used in a national, ILM-approved web ad:

Hi Adrian

Great job!!

Thanks for the credit. Now it will be my turn to download yours, if you make it available, to study it.

Here you go Pixeltec... this is the *almost* complete version (no eyes added) - it's in several layers but you can split it up even more as I've given it lots of different surfaces.

As I said in my original post, I put your model in a background layer and then used that as a template (as opposed to photographs).

Apologies for any less-than-perfect poly flows! I'm still learning this stuff!

Congrats on having your version used for such a high profile job :D

Thanks, Adrian. I'll get to it sometime after I stop working. Too busy right now, teaching high school science.

Yes, actually, it was Lucas Arts that reviewed and approved my Battle Droid for the ad, and the ad agency, which ran a Star Wars game ad campaign, got lots of money, but gave me zip. :thumbsdow

It seems greed and rip-offs are the rule, not the exception.
