here is my lovely vase. as you can plainly see, it sucks, a lot. does anyone know of any great lightwave books for beginners? i have experience in other 3d programs, this is just a lot more difficult. any suggestions?:D

These two books made the difference in my getting a handle on LW.

Yes, Inside Lightwave is a very good series of books. I would also consult the modeling portion of your manual.
The vase looks a little thin. The procedural texture is well, very procedural. You should try increasing the size of the texture in the surface editor so it doesn't have such a repeating texture. Try making the sizes slightly different in the surface editor and see what effects it has.
And why is it sitting on the moon? I think the astronauts left a flag and a plaque on the moon but never a vase....
