View Full Version : Tech mech stuff
This is my first post on this forum so please be gentle ;) hehe
I thought I would like to show a project I have been working on for a long time, I started doing the centre sphere a long time ago, but did not know what to do with it. Lately I have had some time to mess with it again, so I made those arms around it, added a bunch of expressions to them and now it is ready for animating. I don't know what to do with it yet, but some plans are starting to evolve.
These are the first renderings and color corecting test for the thingy:

And here is the first animationtest (http://www.dataport.no/~edvint/forums/doodle.mpg), just to test the expressions, don't take it too serious.

Very well made and put together piece of professional quality work. Fantastic expressions (download the mpeg everyone it's wrth it ;) ) Sorry couldn't make any comment on improvement, you don't need my help:p
Brilliant little character...just finish animating it, it'll be great.

Very nice, i can tell you have been looking at some of David Wilsons work ;) .
Dave
uberslayer™: Thanks a lot :) Expressions are a lot of fun, I use Prem´s Relatibity and it always does the job brilliantly.
Raz: Thanks. The thing is not meant to be that little, it is supposed to be a couple of meters in diameter. But anyway I will try to start to do some animation as soon as I´m happy with the model and texturing. That should take about halv a year or so ;)
Dave3d: Thanks, yes Mr. Wilson is one of my heroes, and the eyes are "inspired" by some of his work.
Here are a new render with a lot less post work than the others. Added a lot more details, and also the extender mechanism from the centre sphere to the "heads:

Excellent work !
I just love the style and the lighting.
Speaking of which, may I ask how it was lit ?
Phil
Flat: All of the above images are lit with the standard beachprobe HDRI image using ImageWorld background plugin and a couple of specular casting light sources.
I thought I would like to show a couple of new renderings of this object. All lit with custom HDRI probes and composited in Photoshop. New in this update is the textures and a lot of work on the details in the overall design of the droid. Machine guns, textures and on the hinges closest to the sphere.

Awesome! :D Looks like something we might see in the next Terminator movie.
I like the composites. Excellent light/hue matching...
awwww it was looking all cute and flippy-floppy and then you go and give it machine guns...
I like the motion a lot. for a machine it has a very organic, loose feel. Like it's a bit worn-out and the bearings are cactus. Nice.

Great model, Edvin.
There's just onething that bothers me, and that's the springs on each "arm-leg-head"...they seems to be sharp edged and squarish and not rounded and on top of that...aren't they digging into the cylinder underneath?

Absolutely brilliant stuff! Those composite shots really are amazing. How long have you been using LightWave?
The model and it's texturing are also awesome, I love the scratches on the different parts of the machine, adds so much to the believeability, and the lighting in each picture really accents the model. Definitely work to aspire to in my opinion!
Jimzip :D
Thanks a lot for the positive feedback folks!
Mclaren: That would be something ;)
Earl: The hdri probes are the way to go, it is a bit of work making these probes, but it pays of.
stib: Yes I try to make it animate the way it looks, old and all the machanics are a bit worn out so that every movement is not 100% controlled. We are working on some cameratracked test shots now. We will post them here when they are ready.
Captain: That is a good observation :) I did not see that the objects are crashing into eachother. Me fix.
These are not sharp edged, but the bevel might be a bit too small.
Jimzip: Thanks a lot :). Regarding the textures, I would also like to add some hard scratches on the sphere under each of the heads. Made when the heads are closest to head. That should produce some good scratching there.
I hope you're not sick and tired of this thread ;) I have finally had some time to animate my droid, I have added partickles for the bullets, smoke. But most of all this turned out to be an exercise in DFX+ compositing. All footage is rendered multipass, with extra passes for shadows and light flashes on the walls and ceiling etc.
First some stillframes:

http://www.dataport.no/~edvint/forums2/Parkering_test_4.jpg
http://www.dataport.no/~edvint/forums2/Parkering_test_1.jpg
And then aquicktime file (2.7Mb). (http://www.dataport.no/~edvint/forums2/Parkering_test_2.mov) of the animation
Future updates will hopefully include sound effects concrete beeing blasted of the floor, more rapid and efficient animations.
I hope you like it :)

That has to be one of the best things I have seen
since I started posting. What did you use to get
the video look?:D

Hi,
I realy like the feel of this.
Please do share on how you did the film grain thing
Best Wishes
daveythegravy
Back from a long weekend :)
astro-sanchez: Thanks a lot mate. The video look was done using a lot of grains (the grain is done on a separeate node, blured and leveled and then blended on top), a bit of desaturation and tinting of the colors towards green/yellows. The video-band is a scaled down black - greyish line that moves on top of the rest and is blended towards the background. I hope this explains some of my grain process.
daveythegravy73: thanks a lot :). See above for details

Very cool. The gun effects seem like a little overkill. I can appreciate some good muzzle flash but it almost looks like your guns are shooting sparks or rays instead of bullets. Are they supposed to be tracers?
I am really glad you liked my droid update Max Wolf
Hrgiger: The guns are supposed to shoot bullets yes :) The bullets in this animation was done in a hurry, inbetween two jobs as a test. So most of it was done using stock heavily manipulated stock footage for the sparkles. And you´re absolutely right it looks overkill. But I thought it looked funny so I kept it like this.
As soon as I have some more time I will update the animation, then I will also redo the bullets and all the partickle stuff. And this time I will do it with a bit more partickles instead of stock tootage ;) If I´m able to get my hands on a DV camera I will try to put the droid into a tracked environment. That would be good fun.
Great work. Its really nice to see the progress you have made on this model from the starting of the thread until the last update.
I don't know if this would help, but when your robot is shooting would the recoil of the guns cause a little rotation?
Overall great work keep us posted.

really .. really nice rendering ..
i really dig the style..
do you have a web page ?
Thanks a lot for all your possitive feedback folks! I really appreciate it :) I will put more update here as I progress with this project.
lede: Yes that´s a good point, I will keep it in mind for the next update. Thanks!
cg-freak: Thanks a lot :)
Rory_L: Yes I would like to do so, but I have way too mutch work to do already. Beeing a partner in our own company shure takes a lot of time.
RiGLEY: Thanks mate.
xtrm3d: Yes I have a webpage, but it´s not updated the last year or so. Anyway the URL is: http://www.skambra.tk or directly to the site (no anoying .tk popups) http://www.dataport.no/~edvint/
