Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Right out of the box (so to speak) and the first time we try to run SE it says,
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\NewTek\SpeedEDIT.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
OK
So we reinstall from the download file, follow all directions again and when we launch SE.....same thing! :bangwall:
Of course the robo-voice at tech support says that all lines are busy and, guess what, they're not even cueing calls. We'll be redialing for hours. You gotta love these guys...the release is months late, the program crashes right away and they're not taking calls. Whoo hoo! What fun!

Our offices closed today at 4pm CST for the holidays, Technical support will re-open Thursday December 28th at 9:30am CST. Did you make sure and do a full install including the windows prerequisites. Also make sure you are running the lastest version of Direct X 9.
Not getting that error here. It would help if you list your computer components in case someone else has the same simptoms. So far I haven't hear of any though.

I decided to go ahead and install mine on my P4 3.0ghz laptop, and so far it's working fine.

No runtime errors on my 3 GHz laptop. Everything installed smoothly and is running reasonably well for having only half the minimum required RAM. Time to upgrade!

Installation on my basic P4 3.0\1Gb DDR\ Sata Drive machine went without a hitch. I isntalled the motion templates. Amazing!!!!! I love them. I threw a few quick avi files and stills in the timeline and no crashes. I will do more extensive stuff over the weekend. I cant wait to report back.
If you guys are having lock ups and crashes, it is probably you machine because most of us are getting along fine. I had to add a GeForce card because the onboard video of my MB doesnt support DirectX or something. I was getting nothing in the screen monitor. But, that was my machine's fault and not Newtek's.

Zane is correct, the first thing I can think of that would cause this error is that you did not allow the Windows Prerequisites to be installed.
If for some reason the audio or video detection missed something or incorrectly reported capabilities that it does not really have, it could also cause the problem.
To diagnose this problem:
1) Right click on My Computer and select Manage
2) In the upper left of the window that opens, click on the plus sign next to Event Viewer
3) This will fold out three options, click on Application (or is it System? Sorry, This is off the top of my head...)
I suspect that you will see red errors listed in the right hand side, probably in groups of three from each attempted launch.
Double click on these and look at the description. This should let me know what the actual problem is.
If it says SxS or side by side, reinstall with the Windows Prerequisites selected.

Martin, this sounds like the system I was consulted on today.
Was your video card reporting N/A to all the accelerated features and RAM size?
Did the driver update get you up and running?
Contact me at jperkins@newtek.com if you need help.

Martin/John,
Was this problem eventually solved? I would like to know because I am getting this exact same error. I have been working with Donny at NewTek tech support on this issue, but so far, we haven't been able to solve it.
Here is my system specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13
Memory: 2 Gigs
OS: MS Windows XP Pro SP 2
Video card: Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE
The machine is a Dell Dimension E520
I started with the download version of SE, but our boxed version just arrived this week, so last night I un-installed the download version and installed the boxed version. Upon startup, I got the same error.
Steps we have taken so far:
* I have updated the video card driver to the latest available.
* I made sure Full install was checked so that the Windows Pre-req's were installed.
* I have installed the latest version of DirectX 9c
* Changed the Display settings for Hardware Acceleration from the middle setting to Full.
Got any ideas to try?
:help:
Thanks!

I set up a system with Intel Core 2 Duo 6300, 1 gig of ram, Win XPpak2, and nVidia 7300LE Turbocache 256meg video card, and everything was working fine on a single 20.1" widescreen monitor, but when it was switched to two 19" monitors, I started getting this same runtime error every time I tried to launch SpeedEdit. As long as the 2nd monitors unplugged, it seems to be fine, so my guess is it has something to do with the additional overhead or video drivers involved in spanning across two monitors, but I haven't found a way around it yet. Any resolution on the above problems yet?
Right now we're running the boxed version of SE, DirectX 9.0c, and whatever version of the nVidia drivers came stock on a new Dell pc as of a few weeks ago. Any help would be much appreciated (SE is kinda cramped on a single 19", and that other one's blank stare is hard to work under. Thanks.

I have learned that SE can be pretty touchy where all things display are concerned. Getting the drivers right is important, and making sure you do not have anything wrong with the GPU or video card ram is important also. Most of our problems were caused by a slight glitch in our GPU, others were caused by the Nvidia manager being up without our knowledge.
Your problems sound a little different from ours, but I would still be suspicious of the VCard. Keep us posted --

Yeah, I'm hoping its something as simple as drivers. I wasn't where I could check the version the other day (although, being a new pc, I was hoping it was a fairly recent one.), and it while usually the advice would be "make sure you have the latest version of the video drivers", it seems like I've seen mention on these forums a few times of the latest driver being what caused the problem, and people were recommending rolling it back to a previous driver version that has been found stable when working with SE. I was just wondering if there's a version of the nVidia drivers most people are using and having good results with, perhaps specifically in regard to this runtime issue?

Um... I'm also running on two monitors. I'll have to try running on one monitor to see if that fixes my problem as well. I won't be able to try it until tomorrow night, but I'll report what I find out on Thursday...
Thanks for the tip...

Well, after messing with it last night, I still couldn't get it to work. Got the same runtime error.
I tried running with one monitor and no luck. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and reinstalled the latest, still no luck.
I'm about to give up on using the PC with SE. I may have to upgrade the actual video card to something with more "umph" as I use another program called SongShowPlus and it complains that the card doesn't have enough capability for higher-end graphics effects.
Yikes. I'm running into this same probllem now.
Seriously? SE is limited to specific video cards chipsets/drivers?
Is this official? I'm running into the same issue on a Macbook Pro right now, attempting to install SE onto a VMWare XP Pro virtual machine.

It won't work on the VM, almost guaranteed.
Are you using bootcamp with a real Windows OS? That's the only way it will work unless Apple has made huge improvements to their emulation.
SE needs the hardware acceleration for both audio and video.
John,
Thanks for letting me know. I am not using bootcamp, and was hoping to avoid doing so.
I'm very sorry to hear this. I guess I'll have to give it a go with Bootcamp.

SE is limited to specific video cards chipsets/drivers?I think most NLEs list recommendations for gfx cards, so I don't find that unusual. I think this is usually more of a concern for laptops, where you want to avoid some rather 'compromised' setups. Otherwise, I think you can usually find a card that works quite nicely with SE for well under $100.
Well the one I'm working with comes with a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.
I don't see why that should be a problem.
Is there a link to an updated SpeedEdit list of recommended video cards somewhere on the NewTek site besides this (http://www.newtek.com/speededit/specs.php)?

Well the one I'm working with comes with a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. I don't see why that should be a problem.Nor do I (mine has a 512meg 9700.) It seems likely something else is going on.
