I am hoping I can get some help. I am trying to follow the 'Texturing 102: Gradients and External Parameters' tutorial from the Newtek tutorials. I am using 9.0 on my MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM. Every time I change the parameters as per step 7, my Mac goes off to left field to think for a bit. It then comes back with the error:

The mesh could not be generated at the current subdivision level. The level will be reset to one.

I hit 'OK'.

It then goes off again for a bit and comes back with:

The mesh could not be generated. Treating polygons as faces.

I hit 'OK' and a short bit later it comes back.

I have tried creating different plane with zero subdivisions, ten subdivisions, and even 100 subdivisions. It does it with each one.

Can anyone guide me on how to get this to work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I were you I would check what sub-division type is used.. Perhaps by accident you made Catmull-Clark patch instead of traditional sub-patch?

Well, I created the box and hit tab. I assume that was the normal type of subdivisions.....am I wrong?

In version 9 there are two types of sub divisional surfaces the old version and the new catmull clark. At the bottom of the modeler window you will find SubD-Type. Clicking on that will give you a small menu to choose between the two.
