View Full Version : New monitor Joy....
It's been a bit of a year, really guys and dolls. There've been a lot of projects, some brilliant - some that have made me tear my hair out.
But the thing is, when you've done a job and worked your guts out, you need to pat yourself on the back and treat yourself to something nice. And so, a couple of days ago, I ordered a new screen.
See, I've been running one 19" Samsung at 1280x1024 and a 17" no-name at the same res. Now, that's a bit rum isn't it? I was used to my 21" glassware rezzing 1600x1200 most of the time. *sigh*
And so, the new beast was delivered. Follow me, dear friends, though my evening from 5pm.

This is actually "tidy" as far as my desk normally goes. Sorry. Tidy desk = Unhinged Mind. It's a rule, you know.
http://www.imaginetix.co.uk/Images/monitor/2.jpg
It's a large box.
http://www.imaginetix.co.uk/Images/monitor/3.jpg
Assembled in Czech, apparently.
http://www.imaginetix.co.uk/Images/monitor/4.jpg
So much stuff. The squashy sheep looks on aghast.

Ready for the Big Unveil.

Oh, my. A Gh0d's Eye View.
Turns out that even though the GeForce 7 that shipped with my mainbox had 512Mb of RAM (1024 times the RAM in my old Amiga 500, for the love of ENIAC), it can't drive the monitor to it's appropriate resolution. So I'm currently at half-res of 1280x800 for now....
New card ordered. Cannot *WAIT* to run LW on it. Droooooool.
This Is Why I Work Really Hard - to make working more pleasurable.
Oh, and I still haven't taken a gorram driving test, can't think why ;)

I too bought one of those beasts a little while ago and have been delighted with it. Word of warning though, at full res you`ll need a 9ft arm in order to drag the pointer aross the screen in one go :)

You have to make sure your video card has dual-link DVI, otherwise it won't work. Regular DVI maxes out at 1920xsomething, I think.
Nice, though. :) **** that thing's huge. You don't quite appreciate how grotesquely enormous it is until you see it sitting next to ordinary mortal displays.

On a serious note, if my memory serves me correctly, I found that the monitor driver included on the supplied disc would not work with a 64 bit system running Windows XP64 for some reason or other, I had to go to Dell`s website and download the driver from there. However if you have a 32 bit system the disc works fine. In all probability Dell may have fixed this by now
Not an issue, I'm all 32-bit here. Then again, LW running on 64 bit 'Doze seems to basically have the same RAM limits as it running on 32 - the load really only lightens on Macs, and I'd rather render what I can really fast than render everything re-ee-ea-ll-y sl-oo-ww-www-ly....
(For the record, the loo roll was to clean off the accreted fag-ash, spilled wine and general Board Chow that had accumulated under the other two panels over the last couple of years. I'm not that bad... ;)
I don't want to go to bed. It's almost half-one, I'm up in six hours... but darn. I want to keep looking at this huge panel taking up 100 degrees of my view-arc :)
I worked hard for this display. I earned it with skull-sweat and determination, and it's mine. Gorram. LightWave paid for this huge slew of technology spread across my desk. Well. I guess I put in a bit, but then, my clients keep telling me it's the computer that does all the work ;)

Good for you not buying it on credit. That's such a coy.
Good on you bog, I wish you much happiness. You deserve it for your forum responses alone.
At my previous job we had a show-off apple with a screen that size. There was a sign next to it saying 'Please take care not to fall into the monitor. Thank you.'
We should all make pictures of our work place and post em... should be fun.
Woah! I've just gone from a crap 17"CRT to a decent 20" LCD and that seems huge but this thing's a MONSTER! What is it, 30"?
Good for you anyway!

Ah, the joy of opening a heavy big box with high tech content... Better then chocolate. Congrats Bog; do apply suntan lotion when you're turning that monster on.
Also; it's nice to see another desk so cluttered as mine. (I'm currently trying to make my own music for a project, but where to leave those big midi-keyboards on the allready crowded space? Currently it's under my elbow)
Cheers!

I have only the 24" Dell. But if it's the same with 30" then you will find out that you want a second one sooner or later. Somehow bad, you can never have enough space. At least me.
Great, I just shot some pix and stitched them together. Where's the thread?

Sweet baby kittens - is that truly a 30" beast bog? (That didn't come out like it was 'sposed to...)
Please - a pic of it in the 'Show us your desk' thread when it's up and running, here: http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60162

I'll post once I've got a DualLink DVI graphics card plugged in and it's running at the right res :D

I don't know if the Dell 30"s are technically different to the Apple ones but I sat there all morning when mine arrived watching it at half res till I realized I needed to plug it into the 'DualLink' output of my graphics card to get the full resolution, hope your card turns up soon Bog, enjoy.

Hey wow! Suddenly everything's bright and clear and doesn't have white text all over it! Dude, you're a genius! ;)
I'm a bit cheesed off now - Dabs.com have been pratting around with my graphics card order so it hasn't even been despatched yet. Despite the yummy bigness, 800 pixels vertical resolution is No Pro. *sighs*
Always something, isn't there? Still, by this time next week I shall be in high-resolution heaven. Or will have gone on a rampage through the hardware suppliers of the United Kingdom, flailing left and right with my Hammer of Naughty shouting "BOG SMASH!" again and again.
One or the other.
*edit* Animotion: The rest of the house is spotless, but my workroom tends to be too covered in essential bits of paper, essential 12cm optical disks, essential memory cards and stuff for me to be able to give it a good tidy-up easily. It's clean (apart from the ashtray), it's just ... well... really, really messy.

Fun can be killed when it comes in small doses, and you expected it to come all at once.
You just need to plan a 'monitor appreciation day' somewhere next week, to savor the goodness.
The day before, you are only allowed to work on your 17" panel the whole day.

Oh, absolutely. Maybe not with the monitor-switching and stuff, but there'll definately be a "dude..." moment or two. I might self-aggrandize shamelessly and render myself some uber-res wallpaper just to really... well... be a tart, I guess ;)

I like exception's idea, but I really think you should take it to extremes. My mum's got an old 4" black and white 'portable' telly (it would be more portable if it weren't for the 30kg foot square box it's sat in) you can borrow the day before you plug the screen-from-above in. I'd even go as far as to recommend you also smear the little telly's screen with vaseline, hire a smoke machine, get chuffin' on those little doobies you've sat on your desk and don your smokin'est pair of sun-specs just to ensure that religious moment that is so rightfully yours :D

When I changed monitors earlier this year, I considered a 30" beast, but I figured dual 24" would cost the same and offer even more screen real estate. So I went to dell expo, got a great deal and bought 4. Now I have 2 machines with dualie setups :) The vid card handles it just fine and they're quite old. (128 meg quadro fx500). Modeler and layout each gets it's own screen ;) My neck hurts :(

It was £940 UK pounds before VAT - I could have gotten it for £860 direct from Dell, but they were quoting a 3-week wait, which at this time of year might as well be "Try again in January". Either way, cheaper than my old Sony 21" CRT was when I first bought it ;)

Dell had 72 of the A01 versions which they had to take back and rework them cause they had backlight uniformity problems. You already got one?
Already got a 3007WFP, but I stupidly assumed my GeForce FX7500LE (apparently "Lame Edition") would be able to drive it at full res.
Nuh-uh. It doesn't have DualLink DVI, and so I'm currently looking at pixels the size of a Lego block at 1280x800 - the 3007s don't have a scan corrector, so it's full-res or half-res with nothing in-between.
My new Gainward 7950 turns up on Monday. Until then, I'm in Commodore 64 mode ;)
The monitor itself is incredible. One of my clients has one, and it really is a Force for Productivity. Proper Pro Kit.

Out of interest what is everyone running their thirty inchers at, I find the highest resolution (2560x1600) too high, all the text is a tad on the small size and I'm no better of than I was on my old 24"CRT so I run it at 2048x1280 which I find is a nice compromise i.e. about 10-15% extra screen real-estate and bigger more legible text

Can't speak of 30", but for my 24" Dell I upped the font size for windows and the dafault font size in firefox. That leads sometimes to mis-aligned css-websites, but overall, the internet is usable again.
