this is a knife that i am working on. it is the first model that i am doing in lightwave. i had to get this render from bryce. (i havent quite figured out the most important features)
my questions are: how can i eliminate the black lines separating the parts, and how can i smooth it out.
i would consult the manual, but i have misplaced it
any help?

;) Yeah right.
Check in the surface editor as set smooth on that should help if not its shoddy modeling.

You could try merging points to see if that's the problem but I think those black lines are from dodgy poly's or bad geometry. What I mean is you have keep your mesh's nice and neat and flowing, with no impossible poly's where your placement of points is not consistant with a plane. Often when I someone asks me what they should do in this situation, I will tell them to start again. This may sound like a big ask, but I am sure you will find that it goes much faster the second time, and keeping your mesh neat from the beggining is much easier than trying to fix it later. Try to keep all your poly's 4 sided where possible if you intend to sbpatch the model.

it would be no problem to start again, that took like 10 minutes, how do i keep the polygons at 4 sides? i have a picture that i am doing it from? is there an easier, or better looking way to do it? i dont care about how easy it is. i just want my first model to look good.

You kind of need to learn modeling techniques, I can't just write a couple of sentences and suddenly you get it. Maybe you could try doing a few tute's, on say : box modeling, point modeling, using extender. I don't know, but I think you need to start some where a little closer to the beginning.;)

sounds like a good plan to me
