Whats the trick to get good shadows on a SSS surface. I've tried raytraced aand shadow map shadows and changing differnt settings but I cant get it to have a decent looking shadow on it. Thanks.
Think of the shadow as the absence of light, instead of a dark 'thing' that's on the surface. In other words, think of the area of the shadow as the base color and everything else lit up by the light source. When you think about it this way, you can see that the edge of the shadow should be soft because the light is bleeding into the shadow area. Do a test render with and without sss. The one with sss should be slightly smaller because of the bleeding, and have a soft edge.
Beyond that you'll need to post an image of what the problem is.
