Hi,

I know this isn't the most normal thread. But I'm curious as to what the regulation for using copyrighted music is. I can use some buy-out stuff, but it's just not as good. I want to use the "Walkin In Memphis" song for about a total of 20 seconds on a video project I'm working on. It will be for a website with heavy traffic. I also just want to use just sometimes 10 seconds of various songs for different videos for this same website.

Also can anyone tell me what this song is from

http://www.souleproductions.com/mmnn/softgoodsong.mp3
I don't even know where it came from, but I want to use it on one of my videos.

any facts and thoughts would be greatly appreciated

thanks
-Larry

Wow - I must be cranky - sorry!
I think I just ready your message all wrong... My apologies.
Here are some good places to start:
http://www.bmi.com/
http://www.ascap.com
Some companies specialize in helping you get rights clearances. I only google searched "music licensing search" and came back with a list including a company like
http://www.hopkinsmusicgroup.com/
http://themusicbridge.com/
http://www.sesac.com/licensing/obtain_a_license.aspx
I hope this helps...

Actually just for the record, it is not my website that will be hosting these videos. My websites never done anything for me. It's barely worth the 20 bucks I pay each month for hosting and annual renewals. I just want to go and figure out all the right ways of taking care of music. I know every wedding videography from L.A. to NYC uses licensed music, I'll bet 90% don't pay any type of fees.

I'll check out these websites. thanks-> and as for the previous post, don't be so cranky:thumbsup: - I've just been trying to get to the bottom of this and in the past I've found these threads to be very useful. The company I do work for emailed me and says they have paid ASCAP/BMI fees, but some songs are not covered under that I guess.

Actually the problem with getting clearances for wedding videos, imag support stuff, and personal usage is getting the licensing people to even talk to you. It is too small potatoes for them.

A new company is just starting to address this particular need. You buy licensing credits within their approved list and get authorization to use the copyrighted materail in your production (with the appropriate restrictions, of course).

I give these guys credit for addressing the market need. They are now in the process of acquiring rights so the jury is still out. Still......take a look at
http://www.zoomlicense.com/.
