Whenever I load a scene I have to reload all my images and re-apply some of my shaders. Why doesn't this stuff save with the scene?:bangwall:

Because all surface properties are object and not scene related. So you'll need to save your objects within Layout to save surface attributes

Its a shame that there isn't some sort of -per scene- adjustment on top of the original surface, that is saved in the scene file, but there isn't. I don't know why this would be difficult to implement. Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

It means that if you want to make adjustments to the surface for a particular shot, you have to save out different versions of the object.

It would indeed be nice to have. The only caveat I see is that the per scene surface would disappear ich the objects surface names are changes outside of the scene.

On the other hand... Other apps have to deal with XRefs to handle external objects (if they support them at all). Looking at it this way I'd rather have the LW way of doing things.

That is a pain indeed. I'd love to see scene specific surfaces, couple with cross surface shading using nodes.

So, here's a question - if you are using Screamernet to batch render or node render on a farm, how does it handle this situation if you changed the surfaces in Layout? Does it discard them when it renders them?

My problem is, some of the surfaces I render I need to change the luminosity to match a background plate; so, I'm compositing in Layout essentially. Is this a bad practice given the situation, if rendering across a network is needed?

That might explain some of the problem that I was having while trying to render a scene across a network in SN...

Whatever the state of the object when lwsn loads it is the state it uses for rendering its frames.
If you change the settings while lwsn is rendering (and save the object), lwsn will pick up the changed objects next time it loads them.

If you just need to change the luminosity for a single shot you should create a special object for that shot only with your adjusted surface settings.
