View Full Version : Flyer hard drives
Has anyone added a new drive to their Flyer systems lately?
I am trying to add an IBM Ultrastar 36gig, and hard drive tools does not see it.
Will this drive work, or is it too big?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Geof

it should work.... I think you might have to hack your filesystem script to get it to "see" the drive? I remember having to do that with some other drives, like a ZIP100 when they first came out.
other things might be that the drive doesn't work? Can you test it on some other computer?
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I don't know how to hack my file system. I did talk to IBM though, and they suggested a different 36 gig drive. They seem to think this drive is "too new"
They suggested I look for an older model.
I will see if I can find one, and post the results.

Hi;
I was looking for another answer when I came upon your question. You should be able to add an IBM 36 GB SCSI to the Flyer. I just added a Seagate 36GB SCSI drive.
Flyer HDTools should be able to see it so long as the SCSI ID is set correctly. Generally, all Flyer drives are set at the default of SCSI=0, (because they all reside on separate SCSI channels; FA0, FB0 and FC0). When you add a drive you have to make sure that SCSI=1 or some other SCSI ID that is not being used on that channel.
Format this drive using Flyer HDTools not workbench.
However, I've done that and the drive shows up just fine but it is only showing 19.8 GB. :( I know this isn't an upper limit as others have added much larger drives. Can someone refresh my memory on what needs to be done on this? Any settings in the mountlist that need to be changed?
(UPDATE: The customer re-ran the Flyer HD Test on this drive. This time he choose to NOT reformat using the old settings and then DID format the drive without short stroking. Just like the manual suggests! Now all 36 GB is showing as available.)
Thanks for your reply.
What Seagate drive did you get? Model number?
I will probably be returning the IBM drive, as I have 30 days to do so. Maybe I will get the drive you have.
Thanks!

Gordon,
Thanks very much for the info.
I bought the same drive, and it works perfectly. It was a nice surprise.
Have a great day!
