I have a JVC GY-DV500 MiniDV camcorder, and want to transfer the contents of a MiniDV tape into the VT. I'd like to do this by controlling the GY-DV500 via serial or other control from the VT. (By the way, I presently have the original VT, and am planning on getting a VT2 and then VT3 in the near future). What's the best way to do this? I don't have a Firewire card in my PC, but if I did, can I control the DV500 and transfer DV via the Firewire, or can I connect them via serial cable and transfer the video via Y/C? Thanks.

With T[2], if you have a DV card installed, and if your system is fast enough, and especially if you have the Main Concept DV codec installed --- you may be able to digitize directly as DV, using the External Controller to provide transport controls for the camera.
Having said that, it's arguably just as good and more accessable on less powerful systems to use the External Controller in the same fashion, but capture as RTV via S-video. The downside is more HD capacity used up, but lower end systems in particular will have less trouble playing the RTV's back without rendering anything.
With T[3], the equation should change a bit, in favour of easier and better DV support, but it remains to be seen yet just how much it might lower the threshold of what sort of host system is required for direct DV capture.
