Been working on this one for a bit and I would like some comments/critiques. Mainly if anyone can give me some pointers about the look of the glass (it seems too thin, especially at the tops) it would be much appreciated.

YUP.......Does look a little thin. Also how about some refraction. I think glass refraction index is 1.6 give it a try anyway, you might need to tweak it a bit.:)

Stains,

I wish I knew where it was, but I once saw a great tutorial on making a Jack Daniels Bottle. It looked excellent and he showed how you would texture it also (Done in Lightwave). If anyone knows where it is, please pitch in.

What I believe was done was there was an inside of the bottle made, either by smooth shifting or extruding. Then you copy both the inside of the bottle and outside and flip the polys. These will be the air surfaces.

You have to set an index of refraction (IOR) for the air outside of the bottle, but I can't remember what that value is. Then you set an IOR for the outside glass (I believe it's 1.3). Then the same for the inside of the bottle and the air inside the bottle.

If you can get to the tutorial, you are in shape. It is some work though (that's why I've never followed with the tutorial). Not enough time.

Yes, I agree the bottles look a little thin.

My main crit would be that cigarette. Unless, it's radioactive, I'd back off on that glow. There's usually not much glow until someone is actually taking a drag on it and even then, it's not nuclear holocaust glow.;)

Here's an update with correctly positioned shadows, a fresnel gradient on the glass, and much less glow on the cigarette. Thanks for everyone's input.

The problem is you need an outside layer, in inside layer and the air inside. once you have fixed the glass problem you are going to have a nice portfolio piece. I only know this cause i did the JD tut.

Go through the Jack Daniels Tut. Once you have you will be able to make realistic looking bottles and glass. The tut rocks.

Thanks guys for helping me get stains the tutorial. When I tried your link fozzybear, it did not work. I was able to find it with your help though.

Opps. Looks like I reversed the URL with the text that was to be displayed linked to the URL.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and for helping me to find that tutorial which helped out quite a bit. I think the glass is much improved over the early versions now, but there is one more niggling problem that I can't figure out. The main label for the botles is mapped on the color channel with an alpha image to define its transparency. On the edge where the map meets the bottle there is a clear difference. Any ideas on how to blend the two seamlessly would be very helpful. Here's my latest render.

I don't really see a difference in the images you have posted. You did not post your latest though and maybe it's visible there.

Oops, I guess the image didn't go through, let me try again. And the trees are not mine, the background came from www.digitalblasphemy.com.

it doesnt look as if the sun is hitting the bottles at all. their shadows are pitch black as if they weren't made of glass. you're not using shadow maps are you?
