Hi
I made the ocean to rise and fall using "Texture Displacement". i modelled a simple boat. i want my boat to rise and fall in sync with the "Textured Displacement" wave. can this be done i Lightwave. Please. Eagerly waiting for anyones reply.

basically, you apply the same displacement to a null and parent the boat to that null

dear bytehawk..

i gave it a try but my null - and therefore boat- is not responding..what can be the problem..?

paste the displacement texture you used for the sea in a textured motion
here's how :
first copy the displacement texture
select the null
press m for motion options
add modifier -> textured motion
activate the y channel
press the texture button and paste the texture in there

The problem with doing that is that a boat or ship has mass. When you rotate it from a single point it can sometimes look strange. You also want the ship to pitch and yaw with the waves. Heres an example:
http://www.3dtrainingonline.com/examples/ship.mov

sometimes the null wont match up with the displacement on the surface using textured motion. With the method I used the ship can be moving across the water and still be displaced and rolling.

Very nice as ever, Larry.
How did you achieve that?

Blending dynamics and displacements. I show how in my displacements and endomorphs II CD (http://www.3dtrainingonline.com/displacements2.htm)

This method is probablly the easiest way Ive seen to pull this type of motion off. :)

In LW 9 you could also try using the Sticky Surface motion modifier on the water and the Sticky motion modifier on your boat.
Or use the Sticky motion modifier on 4 Null objects that drive the corners of your boat (so it won't jitter much with heavy waves)

Sticky surface might work but again the problem would be having the mass of the boat pivoting from that point when the whole mass of the boat would average out the force of the wave along its whole length. The method Ive been using seems to do a good job of doing that. :)

Hi There,

if you don't have LW 9 or Larrys Cd check this out

Hi Again,

I remembered this old 3D World tutorial by Benjamin Smith which has a nice solution to floatin your boat. I have redone the tutorial to remind me of how to do it and have attached it in case you want to have a look at it.
