View Full Version : Rust shader

An older version of LW, (still lurking on the HD somewhere), had a rust shader, that I recall would stick grubby bits in corners.
(Thats a rather non techie explanation, but I hope a fair one!).
Does anyone know of a new equivalent for it? Or is there a good reason not to locate the old shader, and plug it in again? (Such as making the system unstable or something). I'm guessing there must be a good reason why the good folks at LW pulled it...
Cheers,
Nick

Yeh, those natural shaders were pretty cool (I used Snow a few times, as well as the water one (which did cool attentuation effects if you looked up at a light from underwater!)
I think you can probably recreate similiar effects with the much-powerful texture editor of LightWave! :) However getting an accessibility map of your model so that you can identify the 'grooves' might mean a bit of radiosity baking to generate some masks to use.
However if I recall, the rust shader wasn't too great if you animated the object since its 'dripping' seemed to be based on the slope using the Y world axis, and rotating it would cause the 'rust' to change wierdly... But that's a long time ago now - I could be wrong (or just not known what I was doing at the time!) :)

If you have an older copy of LW,(5.6),just drag 'em over to your new directory. I'm using both LW-rust and LW snow with LW 7.5c.

Thanks for the replys. I primarily do still images, so the animation is not an issue, and it's nice to know there are no stability issues.
I wonder why they pulled it from the distribution?

Just a quick plug (!) for my procedural tutorial which uses weight maps and gradients to apply procedurals. There's no reason you couldn't use a weight map to paint on where you want the rust to appear. An added advantage is that there wouldn't be much render time overhead with this as opposed to using a plugin.
You can find the tutorial here:

I don’t have 5.6 but could really use the plug-ins talked about here.
Most of my work is stills as well.
And something to dirty the corners with min works is something I’ve been in need of for ages.
Any chance of uploading them?

I have absolutely no idea if it is permitted to do this!

fxnut's tutorial is pretty good. Teach a man procedurals and he creates for a lifetime, give him a shader and he creates for a day. ;)

My first LW purchase is 7.5 and the shaders has LW_Rust, LW_Snow and LW_Water. I don't if they are original or not. They're part of the Legacy plugins. I use IFW2 shaders a bit. There are many of those, and pretty versatile.

The Legacy files were supplied so that old scenes could be rendered in the newer (6 first, then 7) versions of LW. I'm pretty sure that you can't edit the scene though.
