Digital Confusion halo?

I was playing around with DOF, the Digital Confusion plugin, and the DOF Blur plugin. I found that both plugins create a noticeable halo around the object, whereas the built-in DOF does not.

I'm posting an example of Digital Confusion with enhanced extreme antialiasing (adaptive AA off).

Digital Confusion's autofocus seems pretty neat, but the renders are slow and the output isn't great. Am I missing something?

I recommend you using X-DOF by evasion it's really great.

the halo comes from blurring the background when it has no data behind the foreground.

In other words, there is no data behind the fin of your rocketship, so that "no data" gets blurred into the background. Turn on "Render hidden geometry" (and then watch your render times skyrocket.)

You can get decent stills with DC if you wrestle with it, but animations get nasty artifacts all over.

Like Palash says, try X-dof - or as a last resort I got decent results using the cameras' dof feature along with the standard dof plug-in that comes with LW, to cancel out each others' minor artifacts
