You think NASA has been having problems with it's space program...you haven't seen anything yet.
I was playing around with the SSS Omega fellow and came up with a pretty sick texture for my dropship. Was done with the omega+lambert+radiosity formula. Though, I don't feel radiosity is needed with omega+lambert, but a few very subtle details do come out using radiosity and the render hit isn't really any worse when you add radiosity.
This rendered in only 7min 28 sec. @ 1280x1024 with 9 pass classic medium enhanced anti-aliasing.

Interesting...but I'm not quite sure why you would want to use SSS on a metallic ship? Surely you could drop render times down do just a couple of mins with an standard opaque texture...

can still see the faces on the mesh. was that intentional? it's a cool effect either way. maybe just needs to be subdivided more

True, steve. Actually, I'm not well versed in texturing, so I am just playing around with the new features. Nothing about this ship's texturing is very intentional. I just thought it a pretty cool effect.

I'm not sure what is causing that. This is a subdivision surface (6 levels at render), so I really don't know why it does that. Maybe it's the penetration setting or something.
Well, here's an earlier test render without all the burnt stuff on there. I think the 'mesh' you are seeing may be one of my procedural layers set at just the right scale to make it look weird.
But I did notice in earlier renders (which are not on this computer, or I'd show ya) when I did a render with some reflectivity on it did seem to show wireframing through the surface, but only when radiosity was turned on.

Nice model - the wings edges seem a little sharp for me and could do with some more detail in that area. Maybe smooth the corners a bit and add some nurnies/sesnors etc?

Thanks, steve. Yeah, details are always in the works. I haven't decided yet if I am going to use this version for animation. This is in concept stage-trying to get a feel for where I am going with the final design. The wings I already know are not going to be used. The front section will be used, though I still may alter it a little bit. The purpose of this model really was to get my feet wet using the new node system in v9. I thought the render I got, albeit totally unexpected, was pretty wild. All part of the learning process.
