Ok. I know many of you out there have done this already and don't think this is a big deal, but I would like to "upgrade" my operating system from Windows 2000 to XP Pro. I have one of Blaine's bullet proof double Xeon's, with a 4 x 73 gig SCSI array, a gig of RAM, blah, blah, blah. Not so concerned with how the Toaster itself will behave, as I haven't seen much negative comment on the boards about the upgrade. I am concerned with striping and how xp will treat my precious high speed storage. Any concerns, pitfalls, things I should do ahead of time, like take out insurance? Have a break between projects and thought that this may be a good time to jump from something that I know works to something I'm fairly certain will work.
P.S.-I'm surprised no one has posted a upgrade-"Cook-Book". It can't be that simple...........or can it?
Thanks
Rich O.
Rich,
I have a Win2k running 3866 and my company has an XP (built by Blaine) running (of course) 3890.
We have had a few issues with the xp machine. First a number of Toaster crashes (many, many more than I get on the Win2k). These may be a result of settings in pref. that were too low (& causing performance issues) [which Blaine helped me with]. Second issue is crashes when working with sub-projects. This happens in "spurts".
I mention this, because once you go to XP, you are stuck with build 3890 until VT[3] comes out (or you become a beta tester).
From what I hear, it does appear VT[3] does not have these issues.
IF you want to switch to XP:
I would use this time to do a complete install/format.
Move to the video array or save to CD's any important files on the system drive (ted projects, custom dve's, tmpgenc templates, dvd projects, etc.)
Reformat the system drive. Before doing this, make sure you can boot the PC (try using the winXP disk) in case something goes wrong when you are reformatting.
Then you should be able to install the winxp disk. If it is an upgrade disk I think you can just insert the win2k disk at the required time so xp see's that you have it - I do not think you need to install win2k first.
After winxp is installed, you can then install 3890 (NOT the downloaded one - you need a CD of it. Blaine can supply this).

I have pretty much the same setup (from Blaine) and my SCSI drives are delivering 172mbs. When I put the latest software on, I didn't notice any difference (we also went from W2K to XP). I haven't had any crashes to speak of, other than the new bugs.
