I have always wanted to make a good photorealistic earth to use in conjunction with my other models I have made...this is the closest i have come so far. I know it has a long way to go before it can be really useful, but tell me what you think I could do.

Too dark.

Why's the satelite blurry? Should be crisp. Shadows should be crisp.
There should be just one, strong light. You could argue reflected light from the Earth, but essentially just one light.

Try a glow on the atmosphere.

there is a glow on the atmosphere, and only 1 strong light source....i guess not enough glow, heh. How would you suggest making that fact more obvious in the scene? thanks for the comments.

I think that your atmosphere needs to be glowing blue, almost like the glow you see around pictures of saints.

First, the avatar is a EAL-04A Pathfinder Alpha from Dream Pod 9's (http://www.dp9.com/Worlds/jc.htm) sci-fi tactical combat/rpg Jovian Chronicles.

And lastly, thanks for tips again.

That's a nice start. As others have suggested an atmospheric glow would help. I also think you should increase the resolution of the planet model. I can clearly see the polygons making up the profile of the sphere. Try turning it into a high sub-patch object or just subdividing the mesh.
